Re: Gammons: Giants Sign Zito!
IF he declines? Give it about 2-3 years and we'll start seeing some major decline and ERA's in the 4's. To think we could have had Matsuzaka AND money to spare (not to mention not being subject to luxury tax). Sheesh.
Take a look at who is going to put up better numbers next year, despite one being in a hitters park and the other in a pitchers park.

Re: Gammons: Giants Sign Zito!
he shouldnt decline, he'll be pitching in a easier league and great pitchers park. even if he does he has set the bar for cc sabithia and zambrano so he should still be trade-able. even morris has trade value now which would of been unthinkable during the past season.

No trade clause for Zito.

Gammons: Giants Sign Zito!
Hey, I'm glad Sabean and Co. passed on paying Vlad, Tejada, and Beltran when those players could have helped the Giants reach the promised land so that they could throw 125M at Zito to help them scramble for 3rd place. I mean, playing not to lose is WAY better than playing to win.
No doubt Sabean will spin this as the move the Lunatic Fringe has been clamoring for.

Like he's tradeable with that contract.

Zito's contract is four times as large as Alfonzo's.
Okay when I think Edgardo Alfonzo I think disaster so when you said Zito is Alfonzo x4 I thought you were referring to the fact that they are paying a bad player way too much $$. Sure they are paying him a lot, but he is a good player with no injuries what so ever and was much needed in the rotation IMO.

Gammons: Giants Sign Zito!
Insane contract in an insane free agent market,
BUT if you are gonna spend the cash, at least you got a proven steady commodity.
Now I would rather have done a 4 year/ $80 M deal instead of a 7 year deal, but my guess is that Zito will be a productive pitcher for at least another 3-5 years....
And yes, he is not an ace.....and god only knows how much someone like Zambrano will get next year....

So he's going to be unproductive for half of an 8-year contract?
That seems like a particularly putrid deal to me.
