Giants make initial offer to Zito
Talking about R. Johnson
quote: Bergen Record: "The chances of a Randy Johnson deal increased Tuesday as the field expanded to four clubs said to have serious interest in the Yankees' edgy left-hander. Along with Arizona and San Diego, the Mariners and Angels are believed to be in trade discussions for Johnson, while the San Francisco Giants -- who reportedly have made an initial offer to lefty Barry Zito -- apparently have backed off."

Re: Giants make initial offer to Zito
So this is a report that there is a report that the Giants made an offer. Still leaves some room for question. Did we ever see direct quotes from Sabean that they actually mad offers to other FA like Soriano, and Lee?
--- Travis Ishikawa is NOT a competent first baseman.

I saw somewhere yesterday that speculated it being a 4 year offer somewhere 70 million or little more and that the offer left some expansion of either years or total dollar amount.

well...that won't get it done. Good sign for the Giants. I imagine if the Yankees deal teh Unit...it won't matter anyway. They will do whatever it takes to trump the Matsuzaka/Red Sox signing.

I agree...I think it will be hard to trump the Yankee's if they're able to somehow dump Unit.

Giants make initial offer to Zito
They did trump it. They bought their own Japanese fella. For five years.

Giants make initial offer to Zito
New York Post: "The Yankees did contact San Francisco about Johnson. The conversation lasted long enough for San Francisco to explain it had no interest in a 43-year-old due $16 million coming off back surgery. Besides, San Francisco currently is allocating its money elsewhere, signaling to Scott Boras a willingness to exceed the magical $100 million barrier for Barry Zito, an official involved in Zito negotiations said."
