Separating 'what is' from 'what was'

3 years ago, Bonds was worth $20 mil. Now? Another story.

SAN FRANCISCO - It seems that I pissed a number of people off by asserting that signing Bonds to a 20 million dollar contract was the worst move that Sabean could have made this off season. For some reason, there are still fans out there that believe that the aging outfielder could lead us to a post season. Hell, I was one of them for a long time. There comes a time however when you have to see the writing on the wall, and separate what is from what was.

Are you asserting that without Bonds in this lineup the Giants would be better off? It sure seems that way. I am saying that with this lineup, the team is better with Bonds, plus, they will be more enjoyable for me to watch AND I will enjoy watching him chase history.

You haven't given any reason why Bonds' deal will hurt the Giants, basically, your posts seem pointless and whiney.

I think he is making the point that Bonds is no longer the guy we can rest post season hopes on like he was in 2002. And for all the other seasons the Giants actually arrived at the post season.

And he's right. Sabean and Magowan said as much when they said if Bonds came back he would not be the center piece. As of right now he absolutely is the centerpiece. So they eventhough they were probably saying that to gain some negotiating leverage, there probably was some truth to it. And depending on what you want to believe, they tried to create a roster without Bonds as a centerpiece, but failed.

Travis Ishikawa is NOT a competent first baseman.
