Some of those upgrades are getting the players injured back on the field.

Although Posey and Sanchez have been out the longest, and were a huge loss, it's a lot more than just those two. Wilson was out almost 2 months. Panda was out 6 weeks. Burrell was out a long time. etc., etc., etc. (and I'm guessing that Burrell was hurting most of the season, even when not on the DL). And I bet that Wilson has been injured for a lot of the year as well, based on how poorly he pitched at times (after his first stint on the DL, for example).
I think people do not really realize how many injuries the Giants had this year, and how much the injuries affected them. Here's a fact that brings it home : all but one of the position players from opening day were on the DL at least 15 days (and most for over a month) during the season. And I don't mean just the starters : except for Huff *every* other position player that appeared in the first game of the season, whether as pinch hitter or pinch runner, went on the DL at some point during the season. Heck, even the relief pitcher who appeared in the game went on the DL! This was one fucked up season full of injuries.
I have absolutely no doubt that the Giants would be coasting to a division lead right now if none of Posey and Freddy and Wilson and Romo and Nate and Panda went on the DL this season. No doubt whatsoever. Although I would like to see better bats next season, what the Giants HAVE to do is make sure they have a dynamite bullpen next year.

Pretty much this.
If the Giants dont lose Buster, Freddy, and Pablo for a month, we're talking postseason right now. DL time for Romo and Wilson didnt help either.

Re:
No one understands the Giants injuries more than I do but the Giants still need upgrades regardless. They needed them last season after a WS title but we were let down. I just don't want it to happen again. I'm also not saying the Giants would be a lock for the postseason had we not had those injuries. Arizona is a good, young ball team that has had their own injuries. We just wouldn't ever know for sure. It's a comforting thought but the Giants front office shouldn't automatically have that mindset when approaching the offseason.

Just to underscore my previous post...
If you look at the box score from the first game, you get these players, and I've added their DL stints.
A Torres CF (DL from 4/15-5/10, 8/13-8/28)
F Sanchez 2B (DL from 6/11-present)
A Huff RF
B Posey C (DL from 5/26-present)
P Burrell LF (DL from 7/15-8/31)
M Tejada SS (DL from 7/19-8/16, as if anybody cares)
B Belt 1B (DL from 6/1-7/8)
P Sandoval 3B (DL from 5/1-6/14)
T Lincecum P
a-M DeRosa PH (DL from 5/18-8/4)
N Schierholtz PR (DL from 7/27-8/12, 8/22-present)
S Casilla P (DL from 4/6-5/28)
As I said before, the only guys who didn't go on the DL : Huff, Timmy. And I was surprised to learn that I was wrong in my previous post : *everybody* from the first game that went on the DL spent a total of *at least* 4 weeks on the DL (ALL of them, whereas I had said "most" in my previous post). Not to mention that there were a lot of other guys who went on the DL who aren't on the above list (Romo, Wilson, Beltran, Fontenot, Ross, ...). It was a really, really, really brutal year for injuries.
Another indicator: Huff is the *only* Giant with enough PAs (as a Giant) to qualify for the batting title. I don't believe that there are many seasons for any team, ever, where only one player has at least 500 PAs.

The market was not all that great. The Giants at the beginning of the season did what they could. As for injuries...you talk like none of us felt the impact or the frustration....LTR, you don't know everything. Marco had to dumb his post down for you so that you might understand. Frustrating like always
