Re: Sabean's actions noted in the Mitchell report.

Obviously Conte as head trainer would never have the authority to bar Bond's personal entourage from the clubhouse. The club expressly catered to Bonds; remember his recliner? Only a member of upper management would have had that authority.

Therefore it is reprehensible that a GM would wantonly abdicate the responsibility to manage his own team's clubhouse. In doing so he did a great disservice to the organization and the institution of MLB. Maybe, just maybe, Sabean avoided a possible confrontation with Bonds over Barry's entourage because he was afraid that he would be overruled by Magowan. Still Sabean's actions present him as a man who did nothing because he wanted to learn nothing.

My prediction on Sabean's post report comments...
"I did my job I listened"

That's exactly the point I just made on the radio. I've been so frustrated by this that I'm sitting here listeing to KNBR on the computer, calling into each show and simmering a salsa verde.

Conte is the help. He has no responsiblity except the training staff and his work with the players. He has no power, so he did what every employee in every business is supposed to do: Report to his supervisor. And Sabean did nothing. That's straight up the chain of command. The ball was in Sabean's court and he did nada.

Like I said, I'm not expecting him to turn Bonds into MLB or rat him out to the media. But for the love of god, take responsibility for your team and organization! Sabean is the boss of everyone below him. Bonds needs the Giants paychecks as bad they need his bat.

I know a LOT of people looked the other way and that complacency was rampant in the 'steroids era,' but I think Magowan has an opportunity here to send a message to the world that this is not how they roll. He should do the right thing and fire sabean tomorrow. Not even for the steroids aspect, but to show that they won't tolerate a GM who leads without integrity and honesty. You can't have a GM treat his employees and players that way.

Magowan has an opportunity to send a message that "this is not how we roll," but it's by stepping down as managing partner. Just firing Sabean sends the message, "I'm a massive hypocrite, and Sabean's my scape-goat."

Magowan pleading ignorance and firing Sabean out of moral indignation would be about as believable as Bonds' grand jury testimony.

that very well may be true. Magowan would be a huge hypocrite for firing Sabean.

But, to me the ends justify the means here. I know it's wrong, and you know it's wrong, but if it means Sabean is gone, I can live with it. I'm more thinking of using the Mitchell Report as an excuse to fire Sabean, not neccesarily the reason. I know it's not the most noble idea, but the guy's gotta go and this could be the ticket.

When incompetence doesn't get a GM fired, then you have to grasp at straws to hope something gets him fired even if it's wrong.

Sabean's actions noted in the Mitchell report.

So it took about eight hours for that Chronicle hack that got a job at ESPN to home in on the Giants. I'm disappointed that he took so long. He should have been able to spit this out mere minutes after the fact:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3154019

My favorite part is the following excerpt:

"The timing of Conte's contact with the DEA also suggests the team could have inadvertently had a hand in helping set off the BALCO probe. In August 2002, according to court records, Jeff Novitzky of the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigations unit began investigating the distribution of performance-enhancing drugs to elite athletes by BALCO.

Novitzky wrote in an affidavit that the probe was launched based on "the development of information." He cited two identical tips stating that Anderson was providing drugs to major leaguers. One of those tips came from a local DEA agent."

So not only did Sabean handle this irresponsibly, he may have set off the whole BALCO investigation.

!@#$.

Classic.

Incompetence springs from the top. If Magowan can't see what Sabean has done, then I certainly don't trust his ability to hire a successor.

What a fantastic human being. Someone give that asshole medal. Maybe a statue on the NW corner.

That whole idea didn't even dawn on me. Just crazy stuff.

I don't either, but once the chaos starts, it won't end until Baer, Sabes and Magowan have new offices. At least I hope that's how it would go down. I can see them blowing through GMs for a couple years like the dodgers did a few years ago. And if that makes Baer and Magowan look even less competent to the investment group, all the better.

I know it's sad to help for an organization disaster, but maybe that's what it takes. Maybe we'll have to see a GM a season for two years before something solid comes along. I'm willing to wait. Nothing would bring me greater joy than to see these guys mistakes start to piss off the board and land them in hot water.

With this Mitchell Report, there is a faint glimmer of hope that maybe the Giants from top to bottom could suffer trying to save face and get back on track. That and watching Aaron Rowan blow goats next year should start the regime's decline.
