In less than four weeks, we will embark on the 2006 season in San Diego and look to get back to our winning ways. After watching our team for the past month, we feel that we have made great strides and are on track to reach our goal of making the playoffs. Both Felipe and I are excited about the prospects for the 2006 club, with a nice mixture of proven veterans who have experience in October baseball and some young players who burst onto the scene last year. Everyone here in Scottsdale, including the media, has noticed that this group has a great sense of camaraderie and a very upbeat and confident attitude. Seeing Barry Bonds return to Cactus League action last week was definitely a welcome sight. However before he took the field last Sunday against the Angels, we were already impressed by many different aspects of our team over the first few weeks of camp. Our pitching, with veterans like Jason Schmidt, Matt Morris, Armando Benitez, Tim Worrell and Steve Kline, along with youngsters like Noah Lowry, Matt Cain, Brad Hennessey, Scott Munter, Jack Taschner and Jeremy Accardo, has been encouraging in the Cactus League so far and is making strides towards building on its strong finish last season. This staff has a sense of urgency – knowing a good start, as a group is a must. As many of you are aware, we have signed Randy Winn to a contract extension which will keep him in a Giants uniform through 2009. Our team took on a new dimension when we acquired him last year from the Mariners. Randy is a player who can put pressure on the defense from the top of the order with his ability to get on base, steal a base or hit the ball out of the park. We’re excited to see him in our lineup for a full season with the likes of Omar Vizquel, Ray Durham, Bonds, Moises Alou, Pedro Feliz, Lance Niekro and Mike Matheny. One thing we set out to do over the winter was to make our club as strong as possible throughout the 25-man roster. We think we accomplished that with the additions of Steve Finley, Mark Sweeney and Jose Vizcaino. All three of these men are proven Major Leaguers who have helped their teams to many different post-season appearances during their careers. In fact, we have built a roster that has combined for 58 trips to the playoffs, 367 post-season contests, 33 All-Star Games and 27 Gold Gloves. As Opening Day fast approaches, we want to take this opportunity to thank you for your loyal support of the Giants over the years. With your help this season, we’re hoping to make AT&T Park one of the best homefield advantages in baseball again. We’re looking forward to seeing you when we return to the Bay Area for the annual Bay Bridge Series. We believe you will see a team that will make you proud to be a Giants fan. Sincerely, Brian R. Sabean Senior Vice President and General Manager San Francisco Giants nondisclosed_email@example.com (merkin)Wed, 15 Mar 2006 16:39:48 +0000
