March 22, 2006 Mil 10 Tex 5 & ANA 11 SF 4

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Long day today but a day night spring traning doubleheader is a great time for any baseball fan.

MARYVALE

I'll keep my update short here with just a few things as I'm sure you want to hear the Giants game.

First let me say that Maryvale (Spring Training Home of the Brewers) is my favorite facility. Very rarely is it crowded and you can move around the stadium very easily. We walked up and bought $6 lawn seats and were able to sit anywhere in the stadium. The food is decent and inexpensive. For a relaxing day at a ballpark, Maryvale has my highest recommendation.

Some quick points on the game.

Brewers SS JJ Hardy is amazing. We watched him last year and this year he looks even better. Remember his name, you will be seeing a lot of him in highlight reels in the future.

The knuckleballer for the Brewers, Jared Fernandez, that I mentioned in my earlier post got in the game and pitched two scoreless innings.

Not much else worth mentioning about this game, except if you go to spring training, make Maryvale one of your stops.

SCOTTSDALE

Now to the nitty gritty.

But first a rant.

Walking into Scottsdale stadium this evening, we caught the Angels in the middle of batting practice. Upon seeing those red Angels jerseys, I felt like our house was being invaded my the enemy. The 2002 World Series loss to the Angels still burns me deep. We were so close and seeing the Angels and the Angels fans in our house reminded me of that pain. I wanted to kick every Angels fan out of the stadium.

Okay back to regular programming.

Well another loss. thecovester and crew are 0-3 this spring. The good news is we still have one game to see and hopefully we can get a win. Even better is we leave on Friday so we'll take the bad with us.

Some comments on performances.

First and foremost: Matt Cain:

I don't know what to say. He looked good in the first inning but lost it in the second. With the night game, television, Bonds, and the Angels my guess is that he was trying to do too much and the adrenaline was flowing. Very easy for a young pitcher to get caught up in all of that stuff. Matheny tried to call him down but no success. Vlad eventually launched a HR into the desert night. All I can say is thank god it's only spring.

Barry Bonds:

Well, Barry hasn't lost a step batting. He launched a HR to right that lit the crowd up. He wasn't tested much in the field. And came out after getting 2 ABs and a walk.

He got a huge ovation from the fans when he came out to warm up and another huge ovation when he took the field each time waving to the crowd. There were some boo birds in the crowd, mainly the Angels fans that I could tell.

Barry changes the makeup of our lineup completely and changes the game so dramatically, if not for Cain's poor performance, the Angels are fighting an uphill battle from the first inning on.

Edgardo Alfonso:

We booed him when he was announced. Good news here, Fonzi is still Fonzi, going 0-4 and killing an Angels rally. We told the Angels fans around us that he was a sure out and Fonzi obliged. Glad we got rid of him.

Randy Winn:

Was hitting the ball solid up the middle, unfortunately it was right at people.

Jason Ellison:

Misplayed a ball in LF (like he did against the Dodgers last year) Ellison is a CF by trade but he will need to get used to the different angles in Left and Right. Which is where we have seen him playing this week.

After the sixth, both teams got their starters out and it was all minor leaguers from then on.

Jeremy Accardo pitched well as did Taschner.

Kevin Frandsen (who should be our starting 2B next year) looked good in the late innings going 1 for 1 and scoring a run. He also started a nice double play.

Tomorrow is our last game (damn, too fast) in Maryvale. The Giants take on the Brewers.

Send some to the desert, the Giants need a win.
