Nuke Beede versus UC Irvine

Hey All,

I got a chance to watch Tyler "Nuke" Beede last night against the UC Irvine Anteaters.

I have to say...it was like watching Tim Robbins in Bull Durham...HBP's...balls to the screen...if there had been a mascot on the field, he would have gone down.

Beede has a jerky motion, and a very inconsistent release point. He sometimes just hangs onto the ball way too long. When he throws his heater, free and easy, it's got very nice late downward break at 92-93MPH. When he wants to, he can amp that up to 95+, but there's no way of telling where it's going to go.

His curveball looks a lot like Lincecum's; tight spin and no lollypop look, at all, so he'll get swings and misses on a lot of balls that might just hit the plate. Some may mistake his curve for a slider. He's GOT a slider, but it seems to be the pitch he has the most trouble controlling.

But the Giants are going to have a project on their hands in this kid. When Beede was first drafted, I read a scouting report that said while he could show control, it didn't translate to him having command of his pitches. I think that's a real accurate estimation.

If the Giants can get his mechanics worked out, this kid could be a Jason Schmidt type starter. Good height/bulk, very good velocity with movement, and a tight curveball. If he can develop a change or a slider he can command, he'd be very tough to hit.

I hope they've got a line on a Crash Davis type to work with Beede. I definitely see garters in his future.

Haha funny post, and I too watched him for the first time in that game and basically came away thinking the same thing. What great stuff and what little control over it he has. I found it surprising for him being a senior, but if you look at the season he has had it was great and then really was in a funk the last 5 or so starts of the year. He doesn't look like he is getting fast tracked, but can't deny the stuff is there.

Hey mb,

I think Beede's problems start with his jerky wind-up. I understand why some guys use hesitation points in their delivery, but I've never seen much value coming from jerky movements.

First thing I'd do with him is quiet down and smooth out his delivery...slow him down, so he can get a better feel for his release point. Then do a ton of video work, so he can see when his release point shifts, and hopefully, why.

I think a lot of Beede's problems will go away once he gets his release point squared away. Once he starts showing COMMAND of his pitches, then he can worry about being more deceptive.

It's a pick you have to like the guy has MLB stuff already, and if they think they are seeing the same stuff you are then with our guys helping him seems like a no brainer. Can't teach stuff and the kid had it according to my novice eyeballs.
