Who Are You Calling a "Seller"?

Hey All,

As we approach the Trade Deadline, more and more talk will bubble up as to who is, or isn't, likely to be a "Seller" (read to mean "Out of Contention and Throwing up the White Flag").

So, I looked at the Wild Card standings to see what franchises might be positioned to fold their hands, and..wait..what...I realized this was going to be harder than I thought.

First off, aside from Tampa Bay (-10 games), there's no club more than 7.5 games off the pace for a Wild Card slot.

There are, however, 7 franchises currently sitting between 4.5 and 7.5 games out....(divisional standing in parentheses)....

NL
NYM 5.5 (6.5)
PHIL 5.5 (6.5)
SD 6.5 (14.5)
AZ 7.0 (15)
CHIC 7.5 (12.5)

AL
HOU 4.5 (10)
BOS 4.5 (8)
TB 10 (13.5)

So, of this group of potential Sellers, only the following franchises appear to be far enough off the pace in both races to be qualified as high potential Sellers...

San Diego
Arizona
Chicago Cubs
Tampa Bay

What does anyone else think? Who would you predict as alternative Sellers at the Trade Deadline?

I think Texas might get realistic and sell off some pieces at the end of July. They're 7 games back but behind two teams that probably won't fall off.

They've lost enough important players to injury that they might just call it season and take it easy on Yu and Co over the rest of the reason.

Plus, they have a smart GM who probably knows when it's not their year.

I don't see them giving up any of their good young players, because they should still compete next year. And I don't see them giving up Beltre for the same reasons.

But 33 year old Alex Rios who's only got one a club option for 2015? Perfect candidate.

I also think Philly will be a seller. Too much money tied up that they'll take any chance they can get some relief and re-stock the farm.

Hey chef,

Yeah, Texas is definitely a candidate, as they've got a LOT of pressure on them...and not only from the A's, Angels, and Mariners.

The Astros are coming on strong, and have a wave of high ceiling prospects coming into play over the next few years. By 2015, the Rangers may not even be the best team in Texas.

But the Rangers do have a lot of good foundational blocks in place, and would benefit from an infusion of young talent at both catcher and in the OF, as well as their bullpen, which is terribly old.

Regarding the Phillies...man, if there's a team that smells older than Philly, I've not seen it. Their CORE is all 35 and over.

The question in Philly is not whether they're going to be bad for the near term...they are. The question is when they're going to give up the ghost and undertake a complete rebuild. With the strength of the Nationals, Braves, and the potentially beastly Marlins, they're likely going to have an Astros-esque fall, resulting in 2-3 #1 picks in a row.

So my guess is that Philly will squeeze whatever ticket sales they can out of their current roster, blow it up after the 2015 season, and then go into draft and development hibernation until 2020.

Which is why I don't think they'll sell...despite it being in the best baseball interests of the franchise.
