Now that Vanderbilt has knocked off Stanford and punched their ticket to the College World Series, I expect to see Tyler Beede make the start this Sat vs Louisville.
Look for it on one of the ESPNs

Oh, yeah...that's one cool thing about the Super Regionals and the World Series games...you can actually get a chance to see a few draft picks in their natural habitat.

When I got to watch Seth Harrison the other night, it certainly gave me added perspective to know that he was the #7 guy in his Univ of LA Lafayette line-up. Watching him hit, versus the other guys in the 1-6 holes, I realized he was exactly where he belonged on that team...and that I wasn't really very excited about his prospects with the Giants.

College guys are funny, though. Look at Brandon Belt. If anyone had predicted at his drafting out of UTexas that he would ever be a threat to hit 35 HR in the majors, the laughter would have been deafening.

What puzzles me is what it is that turns the key for some college players, given my assumption that they're already getting pretty high level coaching when playing for a name baseball program. Late physical bloomers? Unwilling to accept coaching or change? Who knows?

I guess I just expect college players to either be good or bad within 1-3 years of entering the professional ranks...and if they're going to be REAL good, they're probably going to be that way right off the bat.

No doubt there's a long list of GMs & scouts who feel the same way.

Hey NLTCrow,

I was a little disappointed to see Vanderbilt start freshman Carson Fulmer over Tyler Beede in Game 1 of the CWS...although Fulmer did a great job and was the winner.

Vandy coach Tim Corbin said...

quote:

"It's just about matchups now," Corbin said. "It's matching up a pitcher's skill-set against a team's skill-set, and that's what we tried to do."

"I told the kids leading up to this well before the regional, I said, 'Listen, you might throw these rotations out the door now.' If it fits, it fits, but it doesn't mean that we're going to do the same thing because now you play different teams. It's not three-game sets anymore, with the exception of what happened last week. It's just a matter of matching up our talent against someone else's talent."

Okay, so I guess Fulmer isn't a slouch, either. He was drafted out of HS in the 15th round of the 2012 draft by the Red Sox.

Hopefully, we'll get to see Beede Monday night at 8:00PM EDT against UC Irvine.
