It's quite a treat, considering that this team has been consistently awful with men on base since the end of the Bonds era. Actually, I think a lot of the problems the Giants have had, in terms of hitting well with 2 outs started during the end of the Bonds era. Remember the "Barry and The Seven Dwarfs" years? That was the beginning of it. Whenever a club has multiple black holes in their line-up, opposing pitchers can afford to pitch around the hitters in the line-up, bearing down on the weak sisters with RISP. It's not so much WHAT Giants batters are doing with 2 outs...it's WHO they have taking the ABs. I've contended all along that, if the Giants could stay healthy, they'd be able to score with anyone. They're not playing over their heads...the Giants simply have better heads, and clearly enjoy playing the game together. Funny thing...when you sign/develop 5 starting position players with the ability to hit 20+ HR, and another 2 who can count for another 10-15, opposing pitchers just don't get a whole lot of easy, stress-free innings. BTW, that's exactly what I want to happen, because if we win this division by more than 10 games, we're going to get knocked out quickly in the NLDS, just as we did in 2000 and 2003. If the Rockies get healthy and get a pitcher, they could go on one of their trademark late-season runs. I'd love to see them make it close, and for the Dodgers to finish third. The reason I think we're playing over are heads is that we're doing all of this despite injuries, and Buster Posey having the worst year of his career. I forgot the stats Tolbert mentioned, but some of them are almost unheard off. Also, way that they're hitting with two outs and runners in scoring position is unbelievable. Yeah, I could definitely see anything between there and 100, unless the baseball gods decide to start striking guys down. I don't know about the club playing over their heads, though. I think they could actually get better, once Belt and Casilla return, especially since Casilla's return might give Bochy enough confidence in his back of the bullpen arms to stick with a 5 man bench. Plus, there's the potential impact of seeing Adrianza swapped out for a UI who can hit .250 or better...how cool would it be to see the Giants target a Martin Prado-type, with the intent of holding him over for 2015 and 2016? No...I still think there's some upside to be achieved. Regarding the Giants' competition, I HOPE the Dodgers catch fire, and give the boys a run for their money. I want them to be battle hardened and sharp for the playoffs...not getting all fat and bloated on meaningless September wins, while the Wild Cards are sharpening their knives. I can't seem them playing .650 ball all year. This is a very good team, but they're still playing over their heads. They're putting up unprecedented team statistics. I was listening to Tolbert on my way home from a game last week when he was reading these incredible stats. I have a feeling that the Giants won't run away with the division, and that we'll see a late-season surge by a team—maybe the Rockies when they get healthy, and if they acquire a pitcher at the deadline—similar to that of 1993. However, I think when all is said and done, we'll win the west. nondisclosed_email@example.com (sfg13)Sat, 07 Jun 2014 10:41:48 +0000 Re: Rare Airhttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p590183,from=rss#post590183https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p590183,from=rss#post590183Hey All, In watching the win over the Mets last night, I found myself thinking "Well, the Panda seems to be cooling off.", only to see that Buster Posey, Brandon Hicks, and Brandon Crawford ended up having strong offensive nights...and how about that play Crawford tried to make, deep in the hole, to try to save Cain's shot at another no-hitter? They dynamic that appears to be the key to the Giants' play is their faith that, as long as they all play within themselves, SOMEONE is going to get the job done. The idea of all of them trusting the guy behind them in the line-up to pick them up, should they not get the job done. In years past, the Giants' offense has been plagued with the presence of 2-4 black holes at the back end of the line-up. This season, not only have the Giants cut their number of black holes to 1-2, but one of the black holes...Hicks...has such a high SLG % that he's a one man wrecking crew at the bottom of the order...as long as he doesn't strike out....;+)........ But Michael Morse has also had a huge impact. By adding another impact bat, especially one held by such a goofball personality, the Giants have extended their middle of the order to a point where Adam Wainright called them a Murderer's Row. So who knows? As long as the Giants can continue to get great starts out of the rotation, limit the exposure to their bullpen, and generate consistent offense, maybe they can breath this rarified air for a while. Following their series win against the Reds on 6/5, they're winning at a .650 clip. Now, since moving out to SF, the Giants have only had 3 teams play better than .600 ball. 1993 .636 1962 .624 2003 .621 Ironically, the club's best winning % team since coming to SF didn't even make the playoffs...and I continue to despise the Braves for that, as the Giants had owned the Phillies that year, and..and..and..okay, whatever. So the question I have for this board is whether anyone believes the Giants will continue to play at this level over the course of the season. My belief is no...that there's going to be a 6 game losing streak or two somewhere in the club's 2014 regular season future. On the other hand, the Giants are STILL not even at full strength, missing both Belt and Casilla, and once we get into the August/September time frame, the weak sisters are going to be ripe for series sweeps. So what's the call? A .650 clip equates to 105 wins. Where do you think the Giants will end up? Chimpsnondisclosed_email@example.com (ChimpsDigTheLongBall)Thu, 05 Jun 2014 12:40:02 +0000
