4/30/2014 Padres @ GIANTS Gameball and Joker

I saw a fun Giants win last night, as they defeated the Fathers 3-2 to wrap up a 5-1 homestand on a warm night on the shores of McCovey Cove.

Tim Hudson

Again, Hudson was dominant, and he was dominant on one of the rare nights where AT&T played like Coors Field. What I really like is that we have a sinker-baller in our rotation, and as a result, he doesn't strike out many batters, and he keeps his defenders behind him active.
Anyway, if it wasn't for the home run by Yasmani Grandal, he would've had the complete game.

TIP OF THE CAP: emoticon

Hunter Pence: Pence continued to swing the bat well, as he went 2-for-4, and he scored a run.
It's amazing how someone with such an unorthodox stance can hit so well.

Michael Morse: Who knocked in Pence in the first inning.

Brandon Hicks: Hicks has done great for a non-roster invitee. With his home run to right last night,—just the 34th home run to right field by a right-handed hitter at AT&T—he already has five so far this year.
Then late in the game, he made a tremendous diving stop at second for the second-to-last out of the game.
Hicks' problem is that he's very streaky, but if Scutaro ends up being on the shelf the rest of the year,—something that keeps looking more and more inevitable—Hicks is a great replacement to have.

Buster Posey: Who grounded a single up the middle in the seventh to knock in an extremely valuable insurance run. With the two runs the Padres scored in the eighth and ninth, it turned out to be the game-winner.

Sergio Romo: After Grandal hit one into the pond to end Hudson's night, Romo got the new father, Gyorko to end the game.

AT&T Park Food: At most parks, you only have the boring selection of a hot dog, or a slice at pizza, but at AT&T, you have a wide assortment of great food. They hav Chili, Cha Cha Bowls, Garlic Fries, Crab Sandwiches, Brats and many more. For those with a sweet tooth, they make great Strawberry Shortcakes down in Field Club. They also have a great burrito bowl down in Field Club, something I would definitely recommend trying if you come to a game and sit down there.

Yahoo Yodel

Located down in the heart of the Silicon Valley, Yahoo is one of the best sponsors to have if you're a professional sports team, but the Giants need get rid of the brutally-obnoxious Yodel. When I'm celebrating a Giants home run, it's a bit of a buzz-kill to hear a helium-enhcnced voice yell "YYYYAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOWOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!" Old Navy helped get the park built, and their robot, Rusty was gone after a week, so the Yodel should definitely follow Rusty into an undisclosed shed somewhere.

Juan Perez: In a rare start for Perez, he went 0-for-4, with a pair of strikeouts.

Drunk fan: A wasted fan in section 122 dropped his phone, and while bending down to pick it up, he dropped as well.
I didn't see him the rest of the game, so hopefully someone called a cab for the guy.

I usually don't post final thoughts in a writeup early in the season, but we are now a month through the season, so I want to make some quick observations.
The pitching has improved, but the offense has been incredibly inconsistent.
The Giants are lucky that Clayton Kershaw is out for the Bums. However, when he comes back, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Dodgers go on a roll. I also think the Rockies could be for real, as they are really impressing so far.
With the Giants' good pitching, mixed with good hitting at home, and poor hitting on the road, if the Dodgers and Rockies are going to be the two teams that the Giants compete with for the West, then it is going to be 2009 all over again.
