umpire's career is over

how could he get that call so wrong?, you learn at ten years old that the pitcher has to face at least one batter

So what was the mistake Mattingly made last
year?

If memory serves me correctly his was making
a second visit to the mound WITHOUT making
a pitching change.

Anybody remember?

Is Mattingly 10 yrs old yet?

The thing that surprised me about the umpire getting it wrong was that he sought out the opinion of the crew chief. It took TWO heads to get the rule wrong.

The fact they stood by their incorrect call AFTER being questioned heatedly by Angels' manager Mike Scioscia is only the icing on a big urinal cake.

The new slogan for MLB Umpires...

No Call Too Absurd to Stand Behind

I don't know if Mattingly did it last year or not - he definitely did it in 2010 against us - and it (arguably) won us the game. Bases loaded and it got their closer (Broxton?) kicked out.

IIRC, it wasn't so much that he didn't know the rule, it's that he wasn't paying attention and didn't realize he had left the mound (it was literally a question of one step). And he turned around because one of the IFs on the mound asked him a question (don't remember who it was).

None of the umps spotted it, it was Bochy that saw it and went out and complained that Mattingly had left the mound, so when he steped back onto the mound it was a second visit, so the pitcher must be changed. Which got their closer removed, with nobody warmed up in the 'pen, and bases loaded. It was great emoticon.
