The CA DMV

Since I had renewed my CA drivers license twice via mail, I was required to renew the license in person today and take an eye test.

I stood in the check-in line for 10 minutes in order to obtain a number, so that I could then wait 1 hour and 10 minutes to have my number called. It then took less than 5 minutes to renew my license.

In summary, I waited 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete 5 minutes worth of business.

If the rest of the State of CA government institutions are organized in this same fashion, then its no wonder that our state government is in such economic peril.

What a joke!

Re: The CA DMV

I'm in Oregon now, which is much better than CA, but not great.

But when I lived in Washington, it was facking awesome. They had these little DMV stations all over. Strip malls, neighborhoods.

I called when I first moved to Spokane to see about getting WA plates and stuff for my car. I asked about an appointment and the lady on the phone was like, "uh, sorry, we don't do that." Oh !@#$, I thought. Here goes my Friday.

So I go down there about 9 am with a book and the [sign in to see URL] there NO ONE there. Just three clerks. They took my THIRTY FIVE dollars and handed me brand new plates with stickers already on the spot.

Hac man
I feel your pain, but have to say that if that is the worst experience you've had with the DMV, then you are a very lucky man indeed.

Chef- AZ also has one of the most efficient DMV's too.
Or at least they did when I went into one.
I had to take the written test there, and I was in and out WITH a picture license in under 40 minutes.
(Not just a flimsy temporary license either- an actual credit card type license)
And the license ( at the time) was good for 20 years!

Plus they only charge 20 bucks for car registration, and the late fee is 10 bucks, no matter how long the registration has been lapsed for.

(California totally !@#$ us on registration costs, and the late fees get huge too, and rapidly get exponentially higher-- the late fees go up like three times in 60 days, it's ridiculous. And they get especially high if you are way overdue)

Also, here is a good tip to know-
If you are an out-of -state driver and get a speeding ticket from one of those cameras that they have all over the freeways now in AZ.
There is no nasty downside for not paying it.
It's not treated like skipping out on a ticket that was issued by a live officer. And other states do not recognize or pursue the AZ penalty for skipping out on a camera ticket (which is to put a stop on your license or registration renewal until you pay up)
You won't have an FTA or warrant that appears on out of state ( Non AZ) police screens when they run your info after stopping you for something.

[sign in to see URL] you plan on getting an AZ license or register a car there some day, might as well just skip paying the 125 bucks, which is what those camera tickets cost.
But if that seems unlikely that you ever will move to AZ, then the fees will only be around 60 extra bucks, so it's probably worth the "gamble".

haha yea, just moved to seattle 4 months ago. Went to the Fred Meyer and got the car licensed, no wait, literally took 10 minutes. Whats even better is it's only $15 for a smog check emoticon

The last 2 times I went in (once to replace a stolen plate, once to get a new picture taken for license renewal) it took less than 15 minutes. I simply called for an appt, and showed up on time. And there were over 50 customers already waiting both times. I guess the key is to call ahead and get a reservation.

The DMV is just like [sign in to see URL] you get a crappy employee. Not everyone that works at the DMV is a [sign in to see URL] had one busted for selling info from drivers licenses to the Hells Angels... (mostly cops info)

Anyway, I'm not defending them, but that Department has a poopload of [sign in to see URL] are hopelessly understaffed and the wages suck.

We have a lot of +++Ahem++++ residents that go to Washington and Oregon for their+++ahem+++licenses because, apparently, you do not have to show a notarized birth certificate to get a DL [sign in to see URL] thats one of the reasons they are faster......

last time i had to go in, i sat there so long I was able to memorize the eye charts
called my number, went to chart, read off the letters without glasses and got my restriction removed from license

and dont worry, I still use my glasses or contacts to drive.....

Or simply use the registration system to get an appointment, and be in and out in 15 minutes ...
