HELP! EXTERNAL HD IS CRASHING!!! ALL MUSIC TO BE GONE!!!

Hey All,

I've a WD MyBook external HD (320GB). It's been acting kinda funny the past few days and today it just stopped spinning. I get the external power light, but no motion.

I put my ear up to it and I'm getting that sad "[sign in to see URL]" sound. It was working okay yesterday. Just been finicky the past couple weeks.

What can I do? I've got ALL of our music on this HD. Never got around to burning backups or anything. And I totally facked? Dude from the local geek shop said that if the HD isn't spinning, he can't do any sort of recovery.

In related news, I've exported my iTunes library and will be taking donations of 'borrowed' music from those willing to help in the recovery process.

Put that baby in a freezer bag and put in freezer for 24 hours. You will get one shot to recover your data, copy stuff off and dump it.

Chef, there are programs that will take music from your iPod and deliver it to another external hardrive. Copytrans is free and works well. It sounds like your external is dust. Don't bother trying to have some extract music off of the crashed drive, it is VERY costly. Mine crashed a few months ago and I had 100 gigs of music on there. The Geek Squad wanted to charge me $1000 to extract the music files onto another external. If you need any punk rock or old sixties reggae let me know. I have tons of stuff (actually too much)

I'm trying the freezer trick and I've sent out messages to my buddies to start burning that music for me on to DVDs. 47.1 GB of music. <poof>.

Worse part is that Mrs. Chef convinced me during our Portland to Corvallis move that I didn't need to hang on to my 250 CDs in Caselogic cases anymore.

I listened. They went into the trash. And now I am sad. Most of it was stuff I bought when I was 12-15 years old. And a lot of them were bought again in the early 20s.

I could go for some punk, though. I had a bunch of random compilations and all of Reverend Horton Heat's library. Plus Tim Armstrongs life's work (from Op Ivy to Transplants.)

Deep down, I'm kind looking forward to searching for some of the more obscure stuff. I haven't had a reason to go to record shop in like six year.

Tried out the copytrans, but my wife iPod with 3GB of our music is Mac formatted. No dice.

Damn bro, it just hit me how much you lost.
Sorry for joking around with you about it elsewhere, even though I wasn't mocking the loss, I just wasn't as sympathetic as I am now.

I hope you can replace what you lost, some of it might be hard to find again?

PS- why throw away 250 CD's of music in nice cases? That sounds like an easy 250 dollar sale on Craigs list?

It's a lot of music, but Mrs. Chef has been on the recovery path as well. We downloaded a couple programs to pull stuff off our various iPods, and some of the stuff purchased from iTunes and Amazon was still on the computer's HD. Plus she contacted apple and explained the situation and they allowed her re-download everything she's ever bought on her iTunes account. So we've recovered about 11 GBs

A good chunk of the stuff was my grunge collection. Some of the painful losses are some live Dave Matthews Band shows that my wife had from years back.

It's not too bad in all. I've got two friends who basically have the exact same taste is music and I've forwarded them my library.

The more hard to find things might be some compilations. I had all the 4080 mixes from the 90s and stuff like that. Next time I'm in the Bay, I'll be hitting up the Amoebas.

Chef, one thing to consider is getting the stuff for free. Type in a search on Google Blog Search and you should be able to find most of the stuff you are looking for
