Cash for Clunkers
I know you're probably getting this !@#$ crammed down your ears on the radio and tv, but this plan is facking awesome!
Teh wife and I are closing on our house sale and considering upgrading in the car dept for something a little safer for Baby Chef. So we go the Toyota and Honda dealers and check some things out. It turns out my 1993 Jeep Cherokee with 177K miles is worth $4,500 on the Cash for Clunker deal!!!
I feel kinda bad giving up the car, as it is a beast of a daily drive without absolutely nothing wrong with it. But, shoot, if they're going to give me four and a half grand for it, they can cram that !@#$ into a two foot box!
As they say in Macro Economics class, not everyone is 'worse off' in a recession.

this stupid program has me thinking of upgrading my truck. The rebate, plus dodge matching the rebate has my trusty RAM 1500 valued at 9 grand at trade in... REALLY hard to pass it up

Does the car have to be running?
Needless to say, it's just an incentive, like a factory rebate is.
The car means nothing to them, but it would be a good way to dispose of a dead beater if someone has one they don't want to pay to have hauled off to the wrecking yard.

Re: Cash for Clunkers
The deal is that the car has to actually be a car you really drive. It has to be running and have been insured and registered in your name back one year.
Basically, you can't just scoop up some CL dumps and try and spin them into $4,500. The plan is get your old gus-guzzler off the road and replace it with something newer and more efficient.
EDIT:
Also, the car you're replacing has to have a certain increase is fuel mileage. The 'net gain' has to be over a certain amount to qualify. There are two tears, $3,500 and $4,500.

Re: Cash for Clunkers
That makes sense. Will they take TWO and give 9 grand off?

Cash for Clunkers
Merk your car gets 20MPH? is that like in 3 seconds or is that top speed?
And serious question, does it have to be a new car you use the credit on?

Originally Merk's ride did 25, but he kept getting in high speed accidents, so they forced him to put a governor on it.
Now he only gets in the occasional rollover.

Cash for Clunkers
It's all moot now ... the gub.mint ran out of money and suspended the program.
