By tax factor, do you mean registration, state fees, etc? In Oregon, our annual fees are not based on car value. It is, in more cases, a flat fee. So the cost of having a 2010 Subaru or a 1993 is the same. nondisclosed_email@example.com (chefjuan)Fri, 28 Aug 2009 21:35:55 +0000 Re: Cash for Clunkershttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p530632,from=rss#post530632https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p530632,from=rss#post530632What I was getting at is, to the extent the car is used for business purposes, then certain sections, for example 167 and 179, of the I.R.C could apply.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Avenge02)Fri, 28 Aug 2009 20:59:37 +0000 https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p530612,from=rss#post530612https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p530612,from=rss#post530612No, just don't think the difference in registration/license fees is worth mentioning. I guess if you're looking to trade in an old crappy car like mine for an expensive newer car it would have more of an impact. But there are tons of other of these small variables...I just feel repairs/gallons per year & depreciation are the big cost drivers.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Jack Flash1)Fri, 28 Aug 2009 20:45:38 +0000 Re: Cash for Clunkershttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p530534,from=rss#post530534https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p530534,from=rss#post530534quote:Jack Flash1 wrote: I drive an old crappy care & probably spent $1,000/yr on repairs. I dig it...small use so not a big factor in operating costs. That said though, you might want to consider the depreciation costs (if either car is new enough to still be depreciating). Basically, you want a car that will not depreciate any longer if you do not use it very often. I drive an old crappy care & probably spent $1,000/yr on repairs. However, if I buy a newer car (would never buy new), it will likely depreciate more than $1,000/yr. Therefore, it's a better economic choice to drive my old crappy car. Your Honda on the other hand will cost about $1,600/yr to drive. Of course if you drive more than 15k/yr or gas in your area averages over $3/gallon...the $1,400/yr in savings using your Honda would go up. You should factor in the annual depreciation variance as well. On gas alone, it would take you about 3 years of driving to get your $4,500 by driving the Honda. Here's the deal, Jack. I don't drive much. Jeep had 4,000 miles put on it in one calendar year. The three months comes up before the 3,000 miles at the old Jiffy Lube So the cost of ownership is really a non-issue. Any trip longer than 5 miles will be in the new car. And any trip to school between about May and November is via JuanPower. So issue is more: if something goes wrong, which one is going to cost more to fix? The jeep is bullet proof. The honda, while reliable and efficient, is a bit more costly on the repairs. So I'll just go about my business spraying my un-burned hydrocarbons for 6.5 miles per day (while it's raining). nondisclosed_email@example.com (chefjuan)Thu, 27 Aug 2009 23:50:53 +0000 Re: Cash for Clunkershttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p530330,from=rss#post530330https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p530330,from=rss#post530330quote:chefjuan wrote: Well fack me. I'm going to lean to the former, Bucks. I'm sure a disclaimer of this sort comes up on a lot of gov't web-based things. By having the disclaimer, it allows the government to fully prosecute anyone tampering with or abusing the site. Essentially, to use the program, dealers are acting as a quasi-official of the government. I don't think anyone would dispute that this is better than employing thousands of people on the gov't dollar just to go dealer-to-dealer to finalize the Cash for Clunkers transactions. As the government is more willing to do business on the web, we're going to see more and more of these kind of things. Imagine what the disclaimer/waiver would say if you were able to vote online or apply for SS benefits through an electronic server. nondisclosed_email@example.com (chefjuan)Thu, 20 Aug 2009 16:42:46 +0000 Re: Cash for Clunkershttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p528643,from=rss#post528643https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p528643,from=rss#post528643Not sure what's worse-- listening to these two idiots speak, or the incredible amount of personal rights given up when agreeing to the waiver/disclaimer.
