Re: One for the winos

I talked to an Oenology professor once about the boxed wine. He said that study after study show the the mylar bags transfer less flavor, have less sealing failure (corkage) and cost far, far less than glass.

Basically he said that everyone would use it if it was more acceptable. The could make really, really good wines for WAY less money, and have their "error rate" be pretty much zero.

Nice add to that Chef. If you ever have a chance to try their wine (I also sell it) give it a shot. I really like the chard. But then again, I am quite partial to Monterey Co. chardonays

Thanks for the info and tip on the black box 77. I normally wouldn’t go that route, but will give it a try and let you know what I think. Hell, it may turn into a nice cellar saving option.

On a tasting note, I was able to make a slight detour while driving back from the north coast down 101 yesterday at River Road, and I paid a visit to Martinelli Winery. I had the good fortune of showing up on a cellar day way they had opened a bunch of different library wines for people visiting from other wineries. The hostess was extremely cool and poured me everything she had open for the industry visitors. We started with their Chardonnays sampling the following:

Three Sisters
Martinelli Road
Zio Tony Ranch
Charles Ranch

They were all very nice and very different wines, but the Three Sisters and Charles Ranch stood out for me.

Moving on to the Pinot’s we tasted:

Bella Vigne
Moonshine Ranch
Bondi Home Ranch
Lolita Ranch

Again it is interesting to compare the differences their various vineyards produce from the coastal regions moving inland. The Lolita was the standout for me, but I could have been happy with any of the bottles.

Moving on to their Syrah’s which were all quite lovely, we sampled:

Terra Felice
Hop Camp
Vellutini

The Vellutini was exceptional, and the hostess said to keep an eye out for their Vellutini Zinfandel which would be released soon. The only downside to the day was that there was only one Zin to taste, their Vigneto de Evo, but it is hard to complain about the variety provided.

If anyone finds themselves in the area, I recommend a visit. Their wines can be a bit pricey, but they always deliver. You can find them virtually on the web]here.

Yep I am up in that area often. Good friends in the wine business, plus my own work. I will check out Martinelli. I have seen their stuff and have driven by their tasting room but have never stopped though. As for Black Box? People have this issue with wine in a box, but really, once you have tasted their wine, it is suprisingly good. I'd rather spend $19 on a box that holds 4 bottles, then pull 4 bottles of wine that costs $17-$30 each night. THAT gets expensive!

Re: One for the winos

I went wine tasting with a bunch of friends in the Santa Cruz Mtns. last weekend.

Highlights were:

Hallcrest Vineyards (Felton) Vista Del Mar Vineyards Pinot Vineyard Designate.

Beauregard Lost Weekend. A Super Tuscan styled blend. I was not too stoked on there tasting room which is located in Bonny Doon at the old Bonny Doon tasting room. Bad service and an upfront tasting fee made a sour taste in my mouth (no pun intended). They would not even give me an industry tasting fee waver or discount.

Storrs BXR-A fantastic Bordeaux blend that rock star written all over it!

Hillcrest Terrace Vineyards-Frambrini Farms Pinot [sign in to see URL]!!!!!! Actually they do not make a bad wine at all. There Sauv. Blanc from Arroyo Seco is slamming

and finally Silver Mountain Winery Santa Cruz Mtns [sign in to see URL]! We drank this with dinner the next night. Delicous!

I also picked up a slamming Rhone style blend the other day and now I cannot remember where I got it! Damn. Ventana [sign in to see URL] you can track this puppy down get it! A beautiful wine.

For those that don't know. You can taste in Santa Cruz without having to drive around the mountains. If you go down Mission St. (Hwy 1 basically going north through Santa Cruz, make a left on Swift St. on the left hand side you will see a big complex that has around 8-9 wineries and all you have to do is walk a couple of feet between the tasting rooms).

The Santa Cruz AVA is becoming a herald wine region with wineries like Cinabar, Ridge, Foggarty, Savanah Chenelle, Storrs, and many more.
