Magowan stressed the need for patience?
Magowan stresses need for patience
By Andrew Baggarly
Mercury News
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Giants owner Peter Magowan is disappointed at how his club has performed this spring, but he isn't setting off alarms over its 7-17-2 record.
"I would have liked to see us play a little better," Magowan said Friday. "The most disappointing thing to me has been the inconsistency. Somebody is good for one game or one start and isn't the next. Everyone says that's what happens in spring training, but you learn habits. One of the habits is to win consistently.
"We've never done well in my 16 years here in spring training and yet we've had some pretty good years. So I don't think it's the end of the world. To me, it's important how we play this last week."
The Giants had a 9-21 exhibition record in 1998, 11-20 in 2001 and 11-19-3 in '04 - all seasons in which they contended to the final weekend. But they weren't rebuilding in any of those years, as they are now.
Magowan said he is willing to be patient as younger players make mistakes. Asked if a fast start would be important to restore consumer confidence, Magowan acknowledged that patience would be required of fans, as well.
"I think our fans are in a wait-and-see mode," Magowan said. "The last thing I want is to put undue pressure on these guys. I do think it's a team that could play better in the second half than the first, as all these young guys begin to get experience."
Magowan declined to say how this season might affect the futures of General Manager
Brian Sabean and Manager Bruce Bochy, who are signed through 2009. But he expressed confidence in both men, and lauded Sabean's hires of scouting director John Barr, longtime scout Ed Creech and his appointment of former Chicago White Sox G.M. Ron Schueler as a special assistant.
"I'm out of the prediction business," Magowan said, "but my hope is we'll play better than we played last year and I still think we have a shot at a winning record. And if we do, we'll have established a base from which we can progress in the future."

magowan has been drinking some kool-aid..and smoking some mary jane..
--- Hamels started toward the dugout after what he thought was a strike. Lincecum didn't get the call & buzzed ump Dana DeMuth w. a fastball that slammed off the backstop & then froze Hamels w. another 3rd strike. 4/28/10 Timmy the ump killer.
