Minor League Notes

Hello from Arizona. Heaven forbid I start namedropping things, but here's some notes from today's minor league games at the Indian School complex (Triple-A and Double-A).

• With Nate Schierholtz returning to the Triple-A squad, Eddy Martinez-Esteve played what I'm told was his first game with the Double-A squad, which is a probable indicator of how the minor league outfields will shape up (Fresno today had Nate-Clay Timpner-John Bowker with Brian Horwitz as the DH).

• A less likely indicator, but curious nonetheless: Adam Cowart was sitting with the Double-A squad charting pitches....which could be indicating that he may skip San Jose.

• Joe Martinez pitched for the Double-A squad, and gave up all three runs allowed by the Giants in that game in the first. In all four innings, he did not miss many bats, and Joe was lucky to have Antoan Richardson chasing down balls, as well as a couple of well-timed double play balls.

• Adam Witter hit a home run that cleared right around the 421 part of the Double-A field (which is shaped like AT&T Park). I still believe in him as the system's offensive sleeper.

• Martinez-Esteve absolutely crushed one ball, so loud that everyone, even those watching the Triple-A game, audibly reacted. The ball went to straightaway left, and cleared the fence by at least 30 extra feet, possibly more.

• The Cubs had J.R. Mathes throwing for their Triple-A squad, and the southpaw had a very impressive slider going. He made every Giants lefty hitter look foolish the first time through the order. Except Nate, who squared up the slider outside and punched it over the shortstop and into the left-center hole, for what could've been a double with less rangy outfielders. Second time? Nate watched the slider miss outside a couple of times, got a fastball inside and slammed it up against the right field fence on the fly for a double.

I'd like to repeat that I love how Nate hits.

• Bowker did better his second time against Mathes, nailing a ball just fair on the third base line on another slider.

• Jesse Foppert was one of the non-starting pitchers for Triple-A. He looked like he had a little cut on his fastball. He was popping the glove quite a bit, but was acting way too fine and had some issues with his counts.

• Ben Cox came out onto the mound, and looked like a different man. The tall pitcher has dropped 30 pounds (according to family, Nick Pereira put him on a diet/workout regimen), and looked special. He faced 8 batters, striking out four (two looking, two swinging), walking one, getting two groundouts and one flyout. Cox is expected to be part of a crowded Fresno pitching picture.

I'll catch the minors a few other times, but will be at the Giants game against the White Sox. There were some new releases, but I don't have the full list yet; there will also be more to come.

You invoked "special"?

Good notes, Brute. Thanks.

Nick seems to have everyone on a diet...

Thanks for the update, I haven't been out there in 2 weeks.
