Brandon Inge is an incredibly versatile and valuable player on a team like the Tigers -- a team on that will challenge for the AL pennant. He can provide instant and reliable support at virtually any position on the field. He's played center, first, catcher and third and even some shortstop. He is a patient hitter, but had a bad season at the plate in 2007 at precisely the wrong time.
He would be far less valuable on a team like the Giants as an everyday player, and he's the kind of player that is a placeholder until someone better comes along.
Defensively, he's very solid and has a cannon for an arm. Offensively, he has some power and hits lefties far better than righties -- the key is getting even or ahead on count with him which is easy for pitchers with command, combined with his patience, which was one reason why he hit so poorly last season: 400 + of hits ABs reached either 0-2, 1-2 or 2-2 and he hit well under.200 in all those situations.
You have just described Pedro Feliz.
'nuff said.........
Defensively, but not offensively. They sound like two totally different hitters to me. Pedro is "teh anti-patience", and he hits righties & lefties equally bad. I'd much rather have a guy who takes more pitches than he should, than a guy who hacks at slop, even if they have the same batting line. Thing is, we don't work the pitcher. Ever. Remember all those 37 second half-innings? Yeeeaaahhh.
BTW, I am not truly advocating Inge, I'm just weighing the pros & cons. Fact is, we have a glaring hole at 3B and a serious lack of power. He fills both.
Another thing i've been thinking about... why trade for Crede? He's a one year rental on a rebuilding team? I mean, we're going to give up a young arm or two for a rental? On a rebuilding team?
That's just
If we have to trade away a kid or two for a 3B, I'd rather get a guy for 3 years than 1. Yes, Crede is much cheaper than Inge, but it shoulds like they're similar players, except one is more patient than the other. As for the $18M thing... come on guys, this is facking baseball. THERE IS NO SALARY CAP. If Magowan wanted to, he could spend 150M facking dollars a year.

Brandon Inge??? WTF?
But Inge's SO / W is 3:1, even though he does extend his ABs. He had 150 Ks last season.

Brandon Inge??? WTF?
I hear ya though. This guy is definitely not someone I'd say "Oh please, go sign 'em!!!" but he fills a need. What are the other options? Velez @ 3B? Our team ERA would be in the 7s.

Re: Brandon Inge??? WTF?
it all comes down to what would have to be given up. crede, despite his awful spring, is the better player. in addition, the giants need a good 3b to come through the system by 2010. this eliminates the need to sign any fa's that blow. inge is not a good enough hitter to pay that much money for...however, if they would take roberts...

There has to be a lot better option out there for third base than F'n Inge or Crede. COME ON!
Again, I just want to cry knowing the Giants might even consider trading for Inge. Why not trade for a younger guy that is blocked in their current organization? Headley anybody? Keppinger?
I just don't get where the Giants are coming from.
The Giants are acting like the drunk guy at the bar at closing time that is so desperate to get laid that he takes home the ugly fat chick "just because" she is there. DON'T GO THERE BRIAN SABEAN, YOU'LL REGRET IT IN THE MORNING.
Just sayin'
