Re: 2008 Amateur June Draft
I stand corrected ... two walk off hits, and one run scored to win the game.

2008 Amateur June Draft
Dude seems to consistently get out on his front foot. Needs to get his timing down better.

2008 Amateur June Draft
Watching that video, things that I immediately pick up:
• A lot of movement pre-pitch. Little of it appears linked to timing (such as Bonds' bat ticks, from which one could tell if he was swinging hard or not, based on how fast, and how hard, the ticks were).
• Particularly worrying about his pre-pitch motion was his rocking forward and back. Movement of the head is something a lot of scouts look to avoid.
• Speaking of movement of the head, his step leads to his head dropping about six inches as he goes into his swing. Usually head movement leads to a lack of hand-eye coordination, and a particular vulnerability to breaking balls, with which the motion can be hidden by head movement.
• Finally, there's a little bit of load time between the start of his swing and the actual swing. It's not much, and he seems to make up for it by being so far back in the box.
• Excellent batspeed, a good indicator of power, and solid coverage of the lower half of the zone, a worry for players with such upright stance.
None of his flaws are things that can't be dealt with later, by improving his mechanics. In particular, lowering his stance to reduce his step should minimize the head movement, which is my big concern right now. The batspeed is very nice, and is something that is difficult to train/teach later, so there is that upside.
I wouldn't consider him at #5, not by a long shot. But it's possible he'd be worth something in the other early rounds, depending on things I can't see in this (Speed looks above average, but hard to tell with his wide turn. Slow getting out of the box; Defense obviously isn't in this clip). Long Beach is good baseball pedigree, and he should be more polished than many college players.

Nice, solid swing finish. All he needs to do, IMO is widen his stance a little and that will eliminate the head slide / drop.
That will also minimize the bending / buckling of the back leg that can also cause vulnerablity to the off-speed stuff.

With that swing he's going to beat the ball on the ground.
