Rick Hurd: Scouts take on Frandsen

Kevin Frandsen “stinks”
By Rick Hurd
Friday, March 7th, 2008 at 10:55 am in Rick Hurd.

Wanted to follow up to Rhonda’s comment on my previous blog. In general, I’m not a big fan of using the “He stinks,” analogy. It’s too simplistic and rarely fair.

That said, those two words are the words I’ve heard most often when his name pops up in discussions with other writers, talent evaluators and scouts. And generally, the conversation goes something like this:

“He stinks,”

 ”At what?”

 ”Everything.”

So far, Frandsen has yet to show he can hit consistently at the big-league level. He hasn’t shown his glove or range are anything special. His speed is average. I realize he’s a relatively local kid (Santa Clara), and as players go, he’s pretty friendly. But the bottom line is that the Giants considered him an outstanding prospect two years ago, and if you hear differently from them, they’re lying. If Frandsen is struggling to be an extra infielder on a team that figures to lose at least 90 games, what does that say about his ability?

I've agreed with that take for a while now. I think he'll turn out to be a great utility infielder at some point, who might get a starting job for a season or two way down the line. That's his ceiling in my opinion.

Even so, the Giants still need to give him a shot, if for no other reason than to force themselves to change the philosophy that has plagued this team for the past 3 seasons.

With him being a local kid and a lot of posters on here fond of him, I was almost afraid to post that blog. I am rooting for the kid, but you have to wonder just what he is going to give us both this year, and in the future. After today, his average sits below the Mendoza line.

I know it's just a small sample but from August 13th to Sep. 30th Frandsen just raked. Via Baseball-Reference he hit .356/.417/.545 /.962 in that period. He also had 14 RBIs and rose his average from .211 to .269.

So I would like to see more before saying he stinks.

I am rooting for him and hope he does well. I love his attitude and hard nosed style of play. But, He needs to pick it up... and soon

It's hard to hit consistently in the majors when you don't play regularly. And when he did play regularly he hit .370 with a .906 OPS in September. That doesn't excuse his slump in late May-Early June, but it shouldn't be brushed off either, since that September was his most regular playing time in his major league career.

I'd take issues with that blog saying he's 'struggling to be an extra infielder.' He's struggling to be the starter, especially after training to improve his defense at second all offseason, and then getting moved to short with barely enough time to start taking grounders at the position. But few would dispute he'll be on the team even if he's not starting.

I still stand by my evaluation of him. I agree, his defense in particular has been very disappointing, but everything else I liked is still there. He's a very good hitter, and I wouldn't put much stock in the .227 line he has (as of this posting) in 22 at bats. If one more of those hits he's had falls in, he's at .272. He makes adjustments better than any hitter I've seen, whether it's at the start of a season/level, or after a slump (like last year).

He's no all-star, but if he's given a chance, he'll be a good second baseman for this team.

 emoticon

we gotta give the kid a season with regular playing time and Bochy/Sabean need to stop jimmy jacking him.
That being said, I was one of the original Frandsen cynics who then had to eat Crow when he FINALLY raked at the end of last season.

I hope I continue to eat crow on the Frandsen issue, but I am starting to have my doubts about that.

Well he did do pretty good in that period I mentioned. That was the final month and a half in the bigs. He really picked it up then. And who cares if he's batting below the Bocock line right now, he's was probably pressing a bit too much trying to play short and took it to the batters box with him.
