LaRoche out at least two months

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- This wasn't the way the Los Angeles Dodgers envisioned the competition for starting third baseman would play out.

Andy LaRoche, who was vying with Nomar Garciaparra for the job, tore a ligament in his right thumb Friday and will need surgery that could sideline him for eight to 10 weeks.

Andy LaRoche, pictured a week ago in a Grapefruit League game against the Mets, needs surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament.

The development leaves Garciaparra as the likely starter on Opening Day, although for now, his status is touch and go. Garciaparra was hit by a pitch on his right wrist in the fourth inning of a 6-4 Grapefruit League loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. X-rays were negative and he will be re-evaluated Saturday.

LaRoche had to enter the game as a pinch-runner when Garciaparra was hit. A half inning later, LaRoche went down when his throwing hand was hit by a pickoff throw to third by Dodgers catcher Danny Ardoi; the ball deflected off runner D'Angelo Jimenez and struck LaRoche in the thumb.

LaRoche will have surgery in the next couple of days, probably in Los Angeles, general manager Ned Colletti said, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Garciaparra, who is hitting .375 this spring. batted .283 with seven home runs last season for the Dodgers.

"We're fortunate that Nomar didn't have something more serious happen to him," Colletti said, according to The Times. "What are the odds of having two third basemen go down in 15 minutes?"

LaRoche hit .226 in 35 games last season and had one home run.

I hear Randy Winn plays a mean 3rd base!! Although since Noah is out and can't cover RF, maybe we should keep him!

Let me be the first to say, "Welcome to the Dodgers, Brandon Inge. May you fail as miserably at the plate as you did last season, but with half the number of home runs."
