posticon Winn becomes latest Giant to take a knee

Winn becomes latest Giant to take a knee

(03-08) 04:00 PST Scottsdale, Ariz. -- The Giants are having one of those springs in which they are finding booby traps at every turn.

On a day starter Noah Lowry underwent successful surgery to repair his unusual arm injury, Randy Winn had to leave a 3-2 victory over the A's when he slammed a ball off his left knee.

After Friday's game, which Nate Schierholtz won with a two-run homer against Alan Embree, manager Bruce Bochy revealed that Tim Lincecum will be pushed back a few days with a sore groin. Lincecum is expected to throw a bullpen session today, which means the injury cannot be too serious.

This team is constantly adjusting. Now that Lowry will start the season on the disabled list, Bochy said the brass is leaning toward carrying 12 pitchers instead of 11. Left-handers Jonathan Sanchez and Pat Misch are the leading candidates to replace Lowry. Although Brad Hennessey will start a split-squad game against the Angels today, Bochy said Hennessey is not being considered as a starter - yet.

Kevin Correia, now the fourth starter, looked solid in the longest outing by a Giant this spring. He threw 68 pitches to catcher Bengie Molina, who played in his first Cactus League game, and held Oakland to a Dan Johnson solo homer over four innings.

Correia said he spoke to Lowry and reported his teammate was relieved to get a diagnosis, as bizarre as it was: exertional compartment syndrome in his left arm.

"You're never happy when you're hurt, but there was a reason for it," Correia said. "Something was wrong with his arm. It wasn't a Rick Ankiel thing that everybody jumped to conclusions about. There's no doubt he'll be back to normal when he gets back out there."

Lowry's injury resulted from swelling in the arm that compressed a nerve and caused weakness in his hand and cramping in his forearm. It was the orthopedic equivalent of being struck by lightning.

"I can honestly say I've never seen a documented case in the arm. I have seen three cases in the hand," said Dr. Kyle Bickel, a San Francisco hand surgeon who has practiced for 15 years and teaches at UCSF. He is affiliated with California Pacific Medical Center and does not work for the Giants.

Bickel said compartment syndrome in the arm ordinarily is caused by a trauma, such as a crushing injury or an amputation. Athletic compartment injuries are more common in the legs, particularly among long-distance runners. Bickel called Lowry's injury "surprising, but it doesn't mean it can't happen."

The Giants hope their top winner from 2007 can start throwing within three weeks and pitch competitively by the end of April. Bickel called that prognosis "very appropriate. There's nothing in that operation, when you relieve the compartment, that has to be repaired. You're not suturing anything together."

Now, the chief worry is Winn's left knee, which he bruised with a third-inning foul ball. He then hit a ball into the right-field corner but had to stop at first base before leaving the game. When Winn hit a foul ball off his right knee in May 2006, the injury lingered and he hit .249 in the second half, although he stubbornly refused to blame the pain.

"I thought the fielders catching the balls I hit affected my hitting," he said. "We'll see tomorrow. I'm hoping this isn't the same as what happened two years ago. It's spring training, I've done this before. I don't want to take any chances. Tomorrow, we'll get a better read for where we are in terms of swelling."

Schierholtz replaced Winn and gave the Giants their third win of the spring with his two-run homer against Embree in the seventh, after Eugenio Velez singled with two outs and stole second. After Tyler Walker's fourth consecutive shutout outing, Brian Wilson struck out two of his three hitters in the ninth to earn the save. Wilson threw nothing but fastballs.

"I threw one fastball and I knew I had it," he said. "It doesn't happen often. You throw the first pitch where you want to and it's got some zing on it. There was no point in working on something else."

When it was suggested that Winn's poor 2006 2nd half was due to fouling a ball off his knee, he deadpanned:

"I thought the fielders catching the balls I hit affected my hitting"

Ok, I officially like Randy Winn. No excuses, baby!!

I don't know why Winn doesn't get more love on the board. He hasn't stunk the joint up, and it's not as if he made Sabean give him a big contract. Guy plays hard, what's not to like?

winn might have been one of the best acquisitions by sabes. he is a consistent professional who gets the job done. he hits 280-300 consistently, plays above aversage defense, and doesn't do stupid !@#$. he would be good in rf for any team in baseball. he's not an all star anymore, but he is good enough to start for anybody. he could be a big reason the giants actually win some games this year. plus he's a local guy.

The reason he gets little (or no) love is because he is streakier than my little brother's underpants. Dude will hit .189 half the season, and .350 the rest of the way. It's viciously annoying.

streaky, yes, but consistently streaky. winn is guaranteed to come out of slumps. winn's average line over the past 6 years:

155 G, .291 AVG, 14 HR, 69 RBIs, 19 SB, 86 Runs

good enough for anyone.
