It's a great when you're looking to acquire a cadre of mediocre 35+ year olds on the cheap. Dusty's always been good at enticing a certain type of free agent to sign for a discount.

Re: thehed's national league preview
Hed,
I disagree with a bunch and appreciate the effort. The biggest being the Mets winning the East. That team is old and prime for some big-time breakdowns. Outside of Wright and Reyes how many players are going to play 150 Games?
As for the pitching, I think too many people are buying into the Holy !@#$-the-mets-just-added-a-great-pitcher hype. Yes, Santana is fantastic, we all know that. But adding one pitcher is not going to put them over the hump. I don't think Santana's addition compensates for the loss in production you'll see from Alou, Castillo and Delgado. Pedro might be a big game pitcher deep down somewhere, but I don't see him getting more than 20 or so starts. He had all of 5 last year. Are Perez and Maine the pitcher they showed last year? I have my doubts. Bottom line, that Mets pitching staff is no match for the offenses from Philly and Atl.

Re: thehed's national league preview
1. Despite loathing the Dodghas for nearly a half century, I think they'll contend in parts due to Torre (let's all impress the new manager!), Loney, and the new/old kid Kuroda helping anchor the back end of the rotation. At Least they'll snatch 2nd.
2. And speaking of snatch....
Since I wouldn't (now OR then) touch Paris no matter how drunk I'd gotten....I'm betting you've overestimated her "receiving skills" and imagine she and her chihuahua/s spend plenty of Q-time, even on sat nites!

if you have a lineup with the trio of wright, reyes and beltran that basically guarantees a playoff birth with a decent rotation.

Re: thehed's national league preview
The Mets have a good lineup, but it's not better than Philly's. And I'd argue, it's not better than Atlanta's. Because all 3 are soft in the rotation, they'll just bludgeon one another all season, like last year.

But will Beltran play 150 games? Is he going to be healthy, or are these reports of his injuries something to worry about for the Muts? He had a pretty big drop off from 2006-2007, leading me to believe maybe 2005 wasn't that big of a fluke. So, although that Trio is good, it has be completely healthy and perform at its best.
There is no room for error with the Mets this year, whereas the Phillies have shown that they can play good baseball without Utley or Howard for extended periods. Utley missed 30 games last year and they still won the division.

Re: thehed's national league preview
defending the mets. beltran is a classic cleanup hitter that as afore mentioned, if he plays 145-150 games, he is going to hit 275, 35-40hr, 110-125 rbi. the biggest question mark is delgado. buster only suggests they get bonds with the alou injury. addding bonds to play 110 games would pretty much take the phils out. so yea, with the injuries, the phils are looking strong, but again their rotation is not that solid after hamels. perez has always been a pretty decent #3, so him winning 12-15 games with their lineup is not that unreasonable, and mai ne surely can win 10-12 games. add pedro for 8-12 wins with santana's 18-20, and that is at least 50-55 wins from 4 starters, which is better than the phils have...this is just like, my opinion man.
also, joe trorre is not going to help the dodgers. he coached the yankees the past 3 years to sloppy, bad fundamental baseball. that does not get it done in the nl.
padres have had a !@#$ lineup for the last 3 years and won the division gtwice, and were 1 out from the wild card last year. it's the same team this year. they just know how to win games. again just like, my oinion man.
thanks for the input fellas.

Re: thehed's national league preview
hed, I get what you're saying about the Mets. I guess I'm just not expecting health from them. But if you think they'll be healthy, they have to be the fav. That's pretty much the question when it comes to NYM. Not a lack of talent.
Concerning the NL West, I just don't think the Pads offense can compete. They went to the playoffs twice with shitty lineups, but the rotations in the NL--and specifically in the West--have gotten much stronger since then. I don't think they'll be able to hang. Their pitching may seem elite, but once you get them out of Petco, the playing field evens out big time. Chris Young's road ERA last year was 4.52. The staff's road number was 4.46 (The worst in the NL West. Even the Rox had a better road ERA). I'm taking the Rox again. I did last year, and everyone thought I was crazy...
