Re: VELEZ!!!
malcontent,
thehed feels the implicit point here is this: the criticism of valez is not because he will never be a good player for the giants. simply, that hetting all hot and bothered over a player becasue of a couple good st games is a bit premature. like, so !@#$ premature it's bordering on pedophelia.

So because those players were busts after having a great spring means that no player in the future can break into the majors after a great Spring. I guess we should just stick with what has been working for the last 3 years, sign over the hill vets and trade prospects for rental players.
I never said that. But at the same time, I also did not grant this kid the second base job based on 3 or 4 spring training games. I did not anoint him the second coming of Rickey Henderson at the dish and on the bases, and I certainly did not ever say that he should not make the team. I merely pointed out that what you are saying - based on a few meaningless games in spring - is just crazy. The kid has not played well enough in the minors (on offense or defense) or in the spring to warrant a sudden ascension to the starting 2B job.
Plus, realize that Omar Vizquel might only miss the first week or so of the regular season. After he returns, he is going to be the starting shortstop again. If you hand the job to Velez, Frandsen - a player much more worthy of the job - gets left out in the cold.
Euginio Velez is fast. That's all he is. He's not a great hitter - he's hardly even a good hitter - and he's not going to steal 100 bases in the majors because he doesn't have the plate discipline to get on base that often.
If you think he deserves a bench spot, I don't know that I could argue, especially considering the dearth of talent on the current ST roster.
But to think that he will continue to hit at his current pace all through spring and then through the regular season is just plain crazy.

Of course it's pre-mature, but what else do we have to look forward to, Durham pulling a hammy? Roberts leading off? I know I am getting my hopes up, but that's what hopes are for.
I would much rather watch Velez suck this year and preparing for next season then Roberts and Durham sucking. I am also going by the assumption that Frandsen will be playing 3rd most of the year, or SS when Vizquel isn't playing.
Which lineup would you want to watch
Roberts LF
Vizquel SS
Winn RF
Molina C
Rowand CF
Durham 2B
Aurilia 3B
Ortmeier 1B
or
Velez 2B
Frandsen 3B or Vizquel SS
Winn LF
Molina C
Rowand CF
Sheirholtz RF
Ortmeier 1B
Vizquel SS or Frandsen 3B
Personally I would rather see the 2nd lineup with getting as many kids as much playing time as possible for future seasons.

Re: VELEZ!!!
Aren't most of them pushing the envelope to be considered "kids?" Or is it just relative?

Re: VELEZ!!!
without aurilia and roberts' shitty contract, there migh have been a spot for velez, but alas there is not. put him on the 40 man, and everytime an old guy is out for a few weeks, velez will get some pt. until then he is fresneck material.

Here's the best part - Velez sucking at second base this year would lead to....Velez sucking at second base next year.
You can put a bow tie on a pig all you want. But that bow tie is not going to turn the pig into a gentleman.
Ay-You-Heen-Ee-Oh Velez may have major league speed, but he's got a minor league bat and a Little League glove.
Once pitchers actually start throwing major league stuff instead of working on the location of their fastball (you know, once the season nears and the minor leaguers are re-assigned to minor league camp) Velez will not be able to hit enough to compensate for his terrible defense.

Yes, let's set our opening roster based on 5 or so games of spring training. Good call.

"A great spring". Hmm. Somebody needs to learn to count. Today : March 3rd. First regular season game : Mar 31st. Days left for somebody to have "a great spring" (or not) : about 27.
I guess we won the war in Iraq because it went so well for the first 1/60th of it. yeah. right.

I too would like to see as many of the "kids" in the lineup as possible. With that in mind I'd like to see the following lineup.
Velez 2B
Lewis LF
Schierholtz RF
Crede 3B
Rowand CF
Ortmeier 1B
Molina C
Bo_ock SS
Just sayin'

Here let me finish that quote
If Velez keeps his current production up through out spring he should be our starting 2B and Frandsen should be at 3rd.
