Re: …

There are a lot of guys who are out of options and must pass through waivers if sent to the minors.

These candidates for the pen are (I believe) all out of options :
Vinnie Chulk
Randy Messenger
Tyler Walker
Brad Hennessey
Steve Kline
Jose Capellan (Rule 5 draftee - must stay in majors all season)
Erik Threets
Merkin Valdez

Yup, that's 8 guys who might be in the pen and who are out of options (Kline can just refuse assignment to the minors). And I didn't list Wilson, who has one option year left, but was "anointed" the closer already. Taschner could start the year in the pen, but he does have an option year left.

The Giants recently signed Chulk to a one year contract for $830k, so I don't see them dumping him now. Ditto Tyler Walker (well, it was for $750k). They won't dump Hennessey either. And although Wilson *can* be sent down, I don't see it as very likely. So that leaves either 2 or 3 spots and 5 guys who are out of options (and Taschner).

I expect the following to happen :
- the Giants will frantically look for any mediocre 2B or 3B or SS with (at least) one option year left as "insurance"
- they will try and use one (or several) of the "out of option" guys as trade bait for the above (or for anything that's breathing and doesn't have to go on the 40-man roster)
- When they have guys "left over" near the end of ST (and they will) : ALL of the guys who are out of options will go on the waiver wire (I'm pretty sure that waivers are *revokable* until Aug 1st). This will allow the Giants to gauge interest and maybe make some last-minute trades. It might also allow guys to "slip through", since a LOT of teams are going to be placing guys on waivers, and guys who are out of options have to go on the active roster (or go through waivers again) AND the 40-man roster. Team's rosters are going to be pretty full at the end of ST.

Either Threets or Valdez MAY end up getting traded or both MAY slip through waivers. A wild hurler and a guy coming off TJ surgery are risks for any team's 25-man roster.

IF the choice is between Kline or Taschner, or between Kline or Capellan, I'd hope that the Giants would just dump Kline. Taschner or Capellan may not be any better than Kline, but they MAY be better. A small chance of being decent is better than an almost 100% chance of sucking. And both the kids have a higher chance of helping the Giants after 2008 than Kline does. Either of the young guys MIGHT be useful moving forward, and Kline will definitely NOT - he will be gone.

And the idiots in the front office (and dugout) are talking about carrying 3 catchers and maybe 11 pitchers? How pathetic.

At least with all these guys out of options, I'm more optimistic that Sanchez and Mich will both be in Fresno in April, as starters - which is where they should be.

Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

Oh, and just to be complete - Lewis, Davis & Ortmeier are out of options as well. It may just be that the Giants will try and slip Lewis and Davis through waivers and if either makes it through then they'll be in Fresno. A hell of a way to choose your active roster, eh? Oh, Rodriguez is also out of options.

These guys have one last option year left : Sanchez, Wilson, Sadler and Misch, as well as Frandsen, Schierholtz, & Ishikawa. If they spend the entire year in the majors, it won't count as an option year. (Well, OK, to be exact : if they spend less than 20 days in the minors.)

Actually, I'm not 100% sure that G-Rod is out of options. I didn't bother tracking *exactly* how many years he spent on anybody's 40-man. I just figured that a guy with 12 (or more) minor league years in ....

I'm probably wrong.

he has to be out of options if there really going to carry 3 catchers which is absurd at this point. what we'll see is nate get sent down to triple a then either lewis/davis getting sent through waivers.

getting rid of kline is a nobrainer but since they have no sense they'll keep him over a valdez or capellan. sabean never thinks about the future thats why there in this mess right now.

I took a quick look, and I couldn't find a single time when G-Rod was optioned as a Giant. He may actually have 3 option years left!

Being assigned to the minors out of of the Spring Training counts as being optioned.
