Re: …

Firstly, a team only get draft picks if :

1- the FA was signed before the deadline to offer arbitration
 *OR*
2- the FA was offered arbitration.

The Giants will get NO draft picks if Bonds signs elsewhere, because he was not offered arbitration.

2ndly, a team's first round pick is always protected if they pick in the top half (picks 1-15). That is why Rowand (a type A free agent) didn't cost the Giants their first round pick, and they lost their second round pick instead.

Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

OK, I found the section in the 2007 CBA :

From Article XX ("Reserve System), section {B} "Free Agency", subsection {4} ("Compensation"}

"A type A or B player shall be subject to compensation only if (i) he signs a contract with another Club prior to Dec 1; or (ii) he is offered salary arbitration by his former club on or before Dec 1."

and from later in the same subsection:

"If the signing club is among the first half of selecting clubs [...] then the choice to be assigned for the highest ranking free agent player signed by such club shall be it second choice, with choices in the next following rounds to be assigned as compensation for the signing of other players in descending order of ranking. If the signing club is among the second half of selecting clubs [...] then such compensation shall begin with the club's first choice."

Tim Marchman is another writer who has for the most part taken a pretty fair approach to Bonds. He weighs in at the Sun on this today as well:

Feeling the move could push the Rays into contention if things break right, which is probably a stretch in their division, but I would still love to see it if the A’s continue to pass.
