Shawn Green
Apparently, Shawn Green is the last remotely viable veteran 1B on the market. I can't say that the Giants have been linked to him, but I am bored, and the process of elimination points firmly in his direction. Discuss

Unless he can teach valuable lessons to teh kids, i figure why bother? I'd rather see Orty get 600 AB in the 1B spot, sink or swim. We are going to suck either way, and even if we by some miracle play .500 ball, we're no match against basically any NL West team. So it's moot.

And if Ortmier is hitting .235/.284 come mid June and they move Richie to 1B permanently all that is going to do is free up more time for Teh Squirrel at 3B which is fine by me, because his time at 2B will be limited by the Great Ray Durham.

What's wrong with .235 AVG & .284 OBP (if complemented with a SLG of .500+) for major league minimum? Feliz's career line is .252/.288/.433 and I would have been "happy" to sign him for 3 years @ $500K per.
--- Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

I didn't think that I'd be able to find any major league player remotely close, and I couldn't. I was surprised to find three names that weren't THAT far off in the (qualified) players with the top 60 SLG :
Jermaine Dye .254/.317/.486/.804
Dan Uggla .245/.326/.479/.805
Khalil Greene .254/.291/.468/.759
Of course, expecting Ort to have a SLG over .430 would be somewhat ... optimistic. But them expecting him to have an OBP of .280 is somewhat pessimistic, as well.

I'd love to have Dye, Uggla or Greene on the Giants.
This weekend I heard Sabean's interview at FanFest. It really sounds like he is committed to playing guys like Ortmeier, Frandsen, Lewis, Davis, and Schierholtz. He mentioned over and over again, that they might even keep only eleven pitchers on the 25 man roster so as to keep all the young position players.
My point is that it sounds like the Giants want to give the "young kids" every chance possible to start. So much so, I don't expect the Giants to sign anybody else like Shea Hillenbrand or Shawn Green.
So even if Ortmeier posts a sub .300 OBP, who cares? This is a rebuilding team and the Giants are going to have to deal with the level of talent that they have until they can develop better prospects in the system.
Just sayin'

speaking of orty @ 1B........
How is he going to work out defensively? I mean, 1B isn't super-demanding, but it gets A TON of activity during the course of a game, and it would be nice to have good fundementals and reflexes.
I seem to recall JT Snow giving him some lessons/pointers at some point last year... am I trippin? Do you think it will help??

Yes, Snow has been giving Orty pointers and Orty was visibly better defensively the more he played and I don't see why Snow hasn't continued to mentor him. I also expect that his learning a new position was taking away from his offensive abilities so this year I think he will do better both defensively and offensively.
