Re: Giants sign Scott Williamson to a minor league deal
I doubt he'll make it, but I don't don't resent his presences in the mix. Hell, if he goes off like a spark-plug, more power to him.

The Giants signed Scott Williamson, former rookie of the year, to a minor league deal on Sunday and gave him a spring training invite.
Williamson joins a host of pitchers trying to get into San Francisco's Bullpen. Veterans Vinnie Chulk, Steve Kline and Randy Messenger are near-surefire bets. Young pitchers Brad Hennessey and Brian Wilson are also likely to make the team. That leaves a maximum of three spots (and probably just two) for a host of other pitchers. Pat Misch and Jonathan Sanchez both could fall to those spots if they can’t unseat Kevin Correia out of the fifth starter spot. Rule 5 draftee Jose Capellan will have to stay on the major league roster to stay with the Giants. Erick Threets and Merkin Valdez will have to pass through waivers if they don’t make the major league team. And rehabbing Tyler Walker has a 40-Man roster spot, with Williamson, Bartolome Fortunato, Victor Santos and Keiichi Yabu all trying to get a 40-man roster spot out of their minor league invites.
I'm okay with this move. I'm not wild about it, but a minor league deal is all potential, no risk sort of a move.
This neglects to mention Taschner. I'd like to think Kline isn't such a 'near surefire bet' to make the team, but his contract probably means he is. But as bad as he and Taschner have been, it'll be criminal if someone like Misch gets left off the team.

Misch and Sanchez still have options don't they? If so, I'd be okay with the idea of them starting and getting innings in Fresneck to start the season.
Just sayin'

Sanchez, yes, as I think he could use the time in Fresno (I'm not as high on him as some, I think he needs more time on the vine), especially if they stick him in the rotation. But Misch...I think he's earned his spurs and doesn't have anything else to prove in Fresno. Especially if it's Kline and (to a lesser degree) Taschner who are in the way.

I'd rather see Sanchez and Misch as starters, even if it's in Fresno, than in the pen in SF.
