It sounds like the Giants might want to try and roll the dice on Merkin for there is a good chance that given his recent performance, no team would pick him up if he were to go unprotected?
Just askin'
I dunno, Thrill. With the success of so many post-TJ pitchers around the league couple with his age and previous reputation, I think there may be a few teams interested in Box Toupe.

Giants/ Chulk settle
Well either the Gaints keep him on the 25 man roster this year, trade him or gamble that nobody picks him up. Those are the only options that they have. The best option IMO would to package him and Threets to someone like the Reds for a position player like EE or Votto or to the White Sox for Crede.
While Merkin might bounce back he only have a few weeks of ST to show it. Basically, I think he's run out of time in a Giants uni.
Just sayin'

Marco...why on Merkin? The guy had Tommy John is only coming back now. Why give up on him until giving him at least another year to show he can/can't come back. Before the injury, he was our #1 prospect.
Threets...well...he does have a cannon...I keep hoping. I'd give him this year to show what he can/can't do...if he can't...then I"m with you...time to move on.
Merkin hasn't pitched well since 2004. Yes, at that time he was "lookin' good" - like Cain. But since then he just hasn't been able to produce, either at AA or AAA. Unfortunately, he is out of time. I'd try and trade him in ST, as part of a package (hah! - like that will happen) and then put him on (revokable) waivers and see if he sneaks by, and can stay in AAA for the year. If it doesn't work - let him go (or try and cut a deal).
Threets I would drop from the 40-man first. Yeah he throws hard - but nobody (including him) is really sure where it's going when it leaves his hand.(OK, I am exaggerating a little bit ). But he also hasn't been able to duplicate the sucess at AA and AAA that he had earlier - lower K rates, high walk rates.
Merkin and Threets are two examples of why I don't get TOO excited about players' performance in A and below. I start getting all happy when I see that they can be successful at AA and above. Since every year it seems that the "great" prospects with "high ceiling" are at Augusta and below ... well, that's why I think the Giants minors have sucked for years.
--- Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)
