Bedard appears to be headed to Seattle; Can Lowry go to CIN?

So Erik Bedard appears to be headed to Seattle for top prospect Adam Jones and two other prospects, according to the Seattle media.

Aside from how asinine this trade is for the M'[sign in to see URL]'s the intriguing part. Bedard was generally the pitcher teams who felt they had no shot at Santana wanted. And according to one rumor not long ago, the team that was preparing to trump the Mariners was the Reds.

[sign in to see URL] the Giants try to pursue the Reds for a Lowry trade?

Sure, the Giants won't get close to what Bedard, who has a lot of questions (including health) like Lowry, got. But they don't need to.

Edwin Encarnacion is probably out of reach unless the Giants add on to [sign in to see URL] too bad an idea. Joey Votto might be a fair deal for Lowry, though, as he was oft-rumored to be one piece of a Bedard deal.

Might be something to hope for, as a lot of teams may have been waiting to see what Bedard fetched before the next round of trades. Someone else not interested in the Santana race may also get in, but corner infielders will be hard to fetch.

Would a deal of Lowry and Sanchez be too much, too little or just about right to land Encarnacion? Just asking?

Out of all the third base options talked about on this board, EE seems to be the best one. He has posted some decent numbers and supposedly the Reds are not very high on him for some reason. It sounds like he is a great candidate for a "change of scenery".

Also don't forget about Keppinger either. He could play some third base too and probably would come a lot cheaper than EE.

I don't know enough about Votto to comment on him although he sounds a lot like Ortmeier but with more power potential. I'd give up Lowry or maybe Sanchez straight up for him.

Anyhow, let's hope that the Reds call the Giants soon after Bedard is traded. It just seems like these two teams match up really well.

Just sayin'

how is adding a top 5 pitcher in the AL an asinine trade for the M's?

just curious seeing as how the starting rotation was what kept them out of the playoffs last season....

Adam Jones might turn out to be a stud, but the M's offense isnt the weak link on their team

im assuming the other two prospects arent ML ready

If it's not assanine, it's ultra high risk. The guys never thrown 200 innings, and he's going to be 29 a week in to ST. He was a top 5 pitcher last year, but that was his first season like that.

If Bedard can fetch so much talent via trade for the O's, one has to believe that there is a decent market for Lowry? Lowry is signed to a decent contract and is still very young. Oh, and he's a lefty.

Unless there are a ton of concerns about his health, I can't see why the Reds would not be interested in him, especially if the Giants were interested in a player like Encarnacion who it is reported the Reds are "tired of".

Seems like a logical fit to me.

Just sayin'

Using the Haren trade as a benchmark, the Bedrad trade makes sense; it follows the market price for a high profile pitcher which is multiple highly regarded prospects.

The M’s can now be quite comfortable matching Bedrad vs. Lackey and Felix Hernandez vs. Kelvm Escobar

yes the M's are giving up a lot, but they are getting a stud lefty to go with Felix in that rotation....

they feel they are one piece away from winning the AL West and I give Bavasi kudos for pulling the trigger

if the M's dont make the playoffs next season, Bavasi will get fired anyway so he has nothing to lose

Irish, it's that kind of thinking that enables GMs to gut their farm systems and cripple the near-term and long-term prospects of an organization.

Surely, we have ample evidence of that in San Francisco.

Raul Ibanez and Jose Vidro and the mummified remains of Richie Sexson do not an offense make. Ichiro's 34, Jeremy Reed has probably reached his ceiling... 22 year old Adam Jones who will play every day versus 29 year old Bedard who won't and likely won't make all of his starts? Ehhhh. It's not a steal, it's not a fair deal, it's an example of that piss-poor "win now" attitude.

Maybe if the Mariners had another strong outfield prospect ready or nearly ready to go it would make sense. But to gut the farm system to get a year or two of peak performance out of this guy is nearly folly.

Bedard is barely a stud lefty.

There's a good comparison between Bedard and Lowry ]here.

In this day and age, I think Bedard would qualify as a stud lefty. The comparison to Lowry is laughable.
One has improved the last 3 years in all areas. One has regressed. One is a top end starter, you can quibble #1 or 2, but still top end. The other is a solid #4.
