Re: Thoughts on the offseason so far?

I'm fine with it. This offseason should have been last offseason. I realized the monetary importance of having Barry on board that one last season, so I didn't mind that, but the rest of last offseason was profound stupidity. Though I have to admit, Bengie worked out better than I ever expected.

As for this offseason, I like the Rowand addition, in regards to bringing "nails" attitude into the clubhouse. 5 years is a bit much, yes, but carrying him until 36 isn't horrendous, lets just hope Sabean isn't around in 2012 to give him a nice 3 or 4 year extensionemoticon

To me, the Giant's offseason goes until the AS break. I'm expecting a cluster !@#$ for the first half of the season, from a true fan's perspective. I believe the market for the veterans they have to move, aside from Winn, is as low as it gets right now. I'd bet thier perspective right now is; Roberts' and Durham's value can only go up, and they need enough PT to prove it. By AS break they will have moved, or will be near moving both. Hopefully Winn too(even though I like him). Winn is far more valuable atm, but they might not be too crazed about trading him for a bag of balls quite yet. Not until they find more solutions for the middle of the order.

My barometer for this offseason will be settled come September 1st. But atm, like I said, I'm fine with it. My biggest disappointment with this offseason is the insufferable bitching and moaning about the organization, Sabean, etc. Get over it, it really doesn't need to be an integral part of nearly every thread generated.

There should just be a "I hate Sabean(or whatever)" thread(s) so the rest of them will stay on the original topic and not get tediously boring due to the same old crap.

Seriously, insufferable is what it is with too many of you people. I'm not the "blowing sunshine up your arse" guy, but many of you have such negative input that it just makes me tired even looking at it. Give it a break already. Heard it(many times). Got it. Give it a break. If you spent half as much time dwelling on the potentially wicked starting rotation, you'd likely spend half as much time on the therapists couch.

Until you look around and realize that the rest of the NL West's rotations are pretty wicked too.

I agree with most of your post. Except for the Sabean Part. I for one was in support of him coming back because I felt that the onus was on PMG for our recent signing of Zito and such. I thought he should be given the benefit of the doubt. I am not upset that he hasn't gone crazy overspending for FA. I am glad he hasn't. My disapointment lies in the fact that he hasn't unloaded one of either WINN or Roberts to open up a slot for Schierholtz. All I wanted him to do this offseason was to open up some spots for younger guys. It also bothered me that he has talked for months about rebuilding this team around Lincecum and Cain... yet he gave serious consideration to the Rios trade. Rios is a good player, but he's not going to ever be a franchise type player. Lincecum very well could be. You cannot trade, or even consider trading Lincecum or Cain UNLESS you get a franchise type player. If you say you are going to build around pitching DO THAT! Stick to the plan. I can live with a few years of losing if that's the case. Play the kids! Is that too much to ask?

The whole negativity barb seems slightly out of place on a thread where most of the posters indicated that they are reasonably content with the relative quiet off-season.

I for one, don’t attribute the foreboding precognition of a losing 2008 season to being negative, it is simply being realistic. Sober analysis of the roster and the division leads inexorably to pessimism for the prospects of a winning 2008 or 2009 team.

Further, what’s wrong with constructive criticism over Sabean’s moves? Sabean himself has been candid over his recent misadventures. Additionally, it is potentially a profitable enterprise to analyze the blunders and miscalculations that created this mess.

I think what makes me look so negatively on Sabean is that HE views a losing 2008 as being a negative. All I want is for Sabean to come to grips with the reality that we have all made peace with. Yes, the are probably going to lose a LOT of games over the next two years. Just don't make them wasted losses. I don't want him to pretend everything is okay or that one additional player in July can be the difference. His track so far is that he has no real feel for the quality of his team. Bonds or not, we all *knew* 2007 would be a cellar dweller. Everyone but Sabean. He seems to lack the ability to take an outsider's POV on the situation. And that's one of the most important qualities that GM should have.

Sabean will probably claim Aardsma off waivers and say "We've bolstered the Pen"

Aardsma hasn't been placed on waivers ... yet.

Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)
