I don't think that he was a good fit for the Giants (40-man almost full, still "need" to find a 3B) but any other team could have gotten him for free. All 30 teams have a decent 1B team already? THAT'S what surprised me - that NOBODY put in a claim.
especially considering the giants situation

Could be a simple matter of scouting reports saying there was nothing there. Yes, it's possible for someone to fluke their way to 10 homeruns in a month. Obviously, since the Tigers sent him down shortly after that barrage and never brought him back, they didn't think there was anything they could do to fix him.
Considering how badly the Tigers whiffed on releasing Pena, I don't know that I'd trust their judgement. The Giants' track record speaks for itself.

Tigers gave Pena every opp to make good, and he couldn't. No regrets in letting him go. Same with Shelton, who was a Rule Fiver, BTW.
He want from a monster at the plate for a brief period to certain out in record time.
Good riddance to both, no matter what they do from now on.

"from a monster at the plate for a brief period to certain out"?
In 2006, Shelton hit .273/.340/.466/.806 in a tad over 400 PAs for the Tigers. True, he had a monster April and a Neifi-ish Sep - but he was "generally OK" for the year. That's why they call them "averages".
--- Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

Re: Chris Shelton waived by Rangers
He hit .286 in May, 2006 with one HR. .205 in June, and .211 in Sept ... I watched the guy play virtually every day and he looked completely adrift at the plate after April.
He had more K's than hits in 2006.
