Not a terribly exciting list. Glad to see they didn't bring in alot of crusty old vets to "compete" with our young players for roster spots.

Can't see the Williams choice. He just didn't impress in S-K and was not as good a player as Tyler LaTorre. Did they just pick him because they want to see where their first round pick is going? Wish they had picked VanElderen if they were going to reach down to short season.

Catcher is one of the the few stable areas for the Giants, it is hard to see either Molina or Alfonzo being unseated without an injury, he would be a ridiculously long shot to earn a roster spot (turn to as a last resort in an emergency, maybe, earn, not so much). This probably has more to do with the choices to be made on the pitching staff than Williams himself. There are some jobs to be won and lost at the back of the bullpen, and it would be a shame if they were decided by catcher incompetence. He's supposed to be the best defensive catcher in the system, and Knoedler's departure leaves little in the way of catching options in the high minors.

Re: …

they just need bodies to catch bullpens -- it happens at all levels of baseball. Williams can't hit but someone has to catch all the bullpens that take place during spring training.

[sign in to see URL] reports New York Yankees IF Cody Ransom has received an invitation to spring training.

i think we should be glad that he's in florida and can't do any damage to us, but just a good laugh for those that need one

Hamels started toward the dugout after what he thought was a strike. Lincecum didn't get the call & buzzed ump Dana DeMuth w. a fastball that slammed off the backstop & then froze Hamels w. another 3rd strike. 4/28/10 Timmy the ump killer.

Because he is a good defensive catcher and calls a great game. Hitting is not everything.

I would say that these days, you have to get at least SOME offense from the catching position.

Williams had 5 home runs in less than 90 at-bats through July, before suffering a fractured wrist. His power suffered mightily after he returned from that.
