I'm not Brute (i'm Brut-al ;-) ) but a couple of comments :
- I find it interesting that he cut off the draft analysis at 2003, NOT including 2002. 4 of the first 4 picks from that draft were in the majors last year (Cain, Lewis, Ortmeier, Correia). It seems he picked his years specifically to prove his point. 2002 was a pretty successful draft year for the Giants.

- he got the timeline for Emmanuel Burriss backwards (he said he did well in low A but sucked after his promotion to SJ. In fact, he was "jumped" a level to start the season (from short-season directly yo high-A) but had problems, so he was sent down a level to Augusta, where he did well).

Those two things : "cherry-picking" his stats to "prove" a point and getting his facts wrong, lowers my impression of his analysis considerably.

As far as I'm concerned developing talent (hitters) is the problem not drafting.

Ooops! Forgot to mention that the fact that the author also avoided mentioning that Burriss stole 68 bases last year, while playing in 125 games AND that he hit .365 in 17 games in the Arizona Fall League.. The author just seems to "miss" info which doesn't back up his point of view.

Credibility dropping like a rock ...

Yeah, he certainly does a crappy job of making an argument.

It's one thing to point out what the Giants have done, but you've got to present some sort of baseline for comparison, like "the Giants' draftees have done X in the majors, whereas the average team has gotten Y from their draftees." Like that Callis/Beane article a few days ago, analysis without context is useless.

I think it should go on the trash heap. Seriously, what's up with repeating 'trash heap' 30 times?

This guy is definitely a 'feast or famine' type of evaluator. Seems like he thinks if someone isn't a star, he's a 'trash heap.' He does a great job of exaggerating by going out to the fifth round on guys...his 1 out of 7 comment probably would be a high level of success for the average fifth round pick. (Only 3 fifth round picks in 2002 have made the majors, just 1 from 2003, and 2 from 2004.)

He also ignores the splendid later round pickups, from Hensley (8th, 2002) to Misch (7th, 2003) to Wilson (24th, 2003) to Frandsen (Hey, position player, 12th, 2004) to Sanchez (27th, 2004). And more could come, in the form of Brian Anderson (14th), Sergio Romo (28th) and Thomas Neal (36th) in '05 to 2006 surprises like Kevin Pucetas (best ERA in MiLB last year, 16th round) and Adam Cowart (35th round).

He's not wrong that Sabean's top picks from '03 and '04 have not panned out. Whitaker was a bust, outright. Aardsma too, although I hated trading him for practically nothing. '04 is a different story...I think everyone expected EME to hit well if he stayed healthy...he just didn't. Sometimes for talent, you have to take a risk. After all, nearly a third of the league thought Lincecum was too risky.

But it is unfair to (again) essentially dismiss pitchers as useless. The pitching staff, like it or not, are half the team and essential to winning.

Oh, and totally loses points for things like 'Jeffrey Jennings' (I don't think anyone other than Todd's mom calls him that), and absolutely misquoting everything about Burriss' career, from his debut (Hey, ever hear of Salem-Keizer) to when he was promoted/demoted in 2007. He obviously doesn't pay attention in the season, and doubt he looks at the Giants minor league system on anything other than slow news offseason days.

Re: …

He is a 17 year old kid. I would wager he probably knows more about the Giants farm than all of his friends in his senior class. Or on the flip side, his desire to know about the Giants farm has probably hindered his ability to make friends in his senior class.

Of course, that doesn't mean that he knows as much as *I* do ... ;-)

And I am just an old phart who has been a G fan for 30 years. Un-professionally. I admit I have my head up my arse at least 10% of the time.

(Which is 2000% less than most of the posters here emoticon ).
