The record obviously weighs big, but you can certainly make a good case for both 02 and 04 as the best though.

I would make the argument that 2002 and 2004 aren't as spectacular if 2001 never happens.

That's when everyone snapped. That's when 200 BBs happened. Bonds was always feared and always pitched around, but what he did in 2001 made people realize what they were messing with pitching to Barry. That's how he ended up with that .609 OBP and pair of batting titles in the years follwing.

'02 and '04 for completely insane seasons. Probably better in total than 2001. But 2001 was more historic and laid the ground work for the next three MVP seasons.
