posticon Mike Martz is your new 49ers OC!

I have no idea what to think of this.

Some random thoughts:

1. He's a phenominal offensive coordinator.

2. He's phenominally hard to work with, and a power freak (so I've heard)

3. His strength is in the passing game. This is bad for Alex Smith, Frank Gore, Darrell Jackson & Co. We are a running team out of necessity. (read: our passing game is terrible)

4. I would absolutely love to go back to the west coast offense, but I don't think we have the players for it.

5. Does Martz even use the WCO? Or just vertical passing game to stretch the field?

6. When Nolan gets fired at the end of 2008, Martz will probably take over, which wouldn't be bad.

....I THINK I'm happy...?? I mean, this could be very, very good, or very, very bad.

I think Cam Cameron is a better fit with the personnel the 49ers currently have but if the 49ers were looking to go in another direction with the offense and get a QB coach in the process, then this is a good hire. To answer #5, Martz is more of a pro-style spread offense, if I could call it that.

As much as the 49ers past is connected to the WCO, the offenses in today's NFL are becoming more of a spread type look, which is another reason why this hire could be potentially good with Martz running something similar to that.

I like the Martz signing. Yes he is a pass oriented guy but hey Marshall Faulk was no slouch during that period. In fact Faulk had his best years under Martz. It's just a matter of having someone with a brain that can utilize the personnel that the Niners have. Good move!!!

As far as I know, only the pats & colts run a hybrid form of the spread. everyone else runs a hybrid of the WCO or straight up run first, pass to strech the field

You know, now that I think about it, the 49ers WERE using a form of the WCO this year. We just sucked at execution.

wco needs a qb with a quick, accurate release, and wr with good hands. We have neither.

No we needed an OC that didn't follow Nolans lead of conservative play. When we started opening up we played somewhat decent.

Martz loves the QB with the big arm, So it seems that Smith would get the noch sorry Hill

Wrong.

Martz likes QB's that are very accurate and aren't afraid to throw it into tight spaces, which is why some of his QB's historically have above normal INT rates. He's never had an athletic QB like Smith but for what Martz is used to, I'd give the edge to Hill because he's shown some ability to be accurate and throwing into tight spaces.
