Swisher Traded
Billy gets busy and trades Swisher to the ChiSox for three players.
Wow! Sorry no link.
And Sabean has done what?
Just sayin'

I hope it does make Konerko expendable. Swisher, by all accounts, is a defensive whiz at first.

Beane is the Anti-Sabean. Trading a guy like Swisher so early in his career, and a fan favorite at that?
According to the report, they got:
Ryan Sweeney, 23-year-old-to-be outfielder. Lefty bat has been disappointing in two major league callups. Spent most of last year in Triple-A Charlotte batting .270/.348/.498. Career .752 OPS in the minors.
Gio Gonzalez - 38th overall pick in 2004. Left-handed pitcher, who put up a 3.18 ERA while repeating Double-A last year as a 21-year old. The year before (after being traded from Chicago to Philly, and before being moved back to the Sox) he had a 4.66 ERA. Very good strikeout rate, below-average walk rate. He has 'stuff', but hasn't appeared to learn to use it yet.
Fautino De Los Santos - A right-hander who will turn 22 before the season. Spent most of the year in Low-A, while finishing up in High-A. Could be the star of the deal, production-wise. Maintained a high strikeout-rate through the promotion and not letting up much on other peripherals (including lowering a solid walk rate).
De Los Santos ma be the key here. Gonzalez has potential, but repeating Double-A, even at his age, should be viewed with caution. Sweeney is not a future star...I'm not even sure he's a future role player.
But Swisher could've been a start to a quick rebuild...now the A's are even less productive, and are down a valuable hitter.

Unlike Sabean, Beane hasn't squandered the benefit of the doubt. The package he got back certainly isn't inspiring, though.
Hmm. Upon further review, the A's got the Sox two top prospects and Swisher isn't as good as I thought (and, as a 27 year old with old-player skills, has likely peaked).

IMHO, Swish is more character than substance on the field and Beane dealt him at his highest value. I will happily eat crow confit if Swish gets better as a White Sox. Not to mention, Beane, unlike Sabean, is willing to take the full brunt of Teh Suck in order to stock the pond. Sabes prefers his long journey to the middle.

His numbers should go up just by playing half his games in U.S. Cellular Field instead of Oakland.
--- Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

Of all the people on the board, I'd have thought you, Bhaakon, would know the difference between a team's top two prospects and two top prospects.
On that note, which are the two that are the 'top' prospects? I'd get De Los Santos as one...but I can't see Gonzalez nor Sweeney as some.
Sweeney is one of those guys that seems to alway get talked about as a top prospect...but why? .400 slugging at best (probably closer to .360), a nice OBP but no speed to pair it with, and an average that has been nothing but down has his level has gone up.
Gonzalez is a classic all-stuff and what else guy? He gets K's, but even in a pitching league, walks so many that it hurts him.
Both these guys' stuff seem to highlight around the word 'young'. Big f'ing deal. Both repeated last season at the levels they were at the season before, and the one thats actually closer to the majors regressed.
If old man skills are a consistent SLG over .440 and two straight seasons of walks of 95+ (even without speed, that's a big deal), plus a lot of intangibles, that's no small thing.
The two better prospects the A's got probably won't hit the majors with an actual impact until Swisher's about to make free agency. Great job postponing actual winning, Beane, if these guys actually help you do that.
