Sabean do you WANT us to hate you?!?!

Sweeney's never been much of a homerun hitter, and the last couple seasons he's been out of the lineup and generally punchless. Even if he make 500 AB's (not bloody likely), 20 homers is probably out of his reach.

I doubt he reaches 20 HR's either but he at least has experience hitting in the 3-4-5 holes that are massive in our lineup. He's a proven run-producer when healthy.

Honestly, I don't see why Sweeney is preferable to Klekso, who also his middle of the order experience.

I'd rather give a talented newbie a chance to acquire and benefit from middle of the order experience than bring in a has been who won't help us win now and won't benefit from another season of experience. Now we just have to find a talented newbie.

[sign in to see URL] we sign Sweeney, we will all be saying sometime in June "Sabean is an idiot! Why did we sign this POS!?" Personally, I'd like to skip that experience, as we're sure to have plenty of others.

I agree 100%. NOW is the time to gamble and invest (e.g., have the balls to risk losing big while trying to find a few young players who will be contributing for years and years).

A half-assed approach (well, we will try a few kids maybe, but sign "vets" so we don't suck too badly) is the worst possible approach: gonna suck anyways (just not as bad), and not as many chances given to younger players.

What's the difference between 5th place with a .390 record and .450 with a 4th place finish (or maybe still 5th)? To me, not much. I'd rather the Giants just bite the bullet, continue to find youth ( via trade now and as we near the July deadline) and if we end up with a top-3 pick in the 2009 draft I wouldn't consider it the worst thing in the world.

At least not for ONE year, as we get rid of all those !@#$ contracts and 2/3rds of the deferred payments. We'll also be one year closer to getting those hot prospects who tore through 'A'-ball this past year.

Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

I don't think the Giants have the pieces to bring in quality minor leaguers who could be counted on to produce 1-2 years from now.

Who that we can afford to trade is going to bring back someone who might fill a spot in the lineup in 2009, 2010?

I don't think he's even attempting to "rebuild." He has not made ONE move that says "rebuild." Re-sign Omar? Sign Rowand? Not DFA-ing anyone? Not trading Molina?

I hate this talk about PMG and Sabean feeling the need to put out a competitive product. Not that I disagree that it indeed happens, but I think they fail to realize they are losing MORE fans by continuing to drive this team into the !@#$. The past three years people came to the game for Bonds and the Park. Less people are going to show up now that Bonds is gone, but not ONE person is going to come to see Aaron Facking Rowand play or Barry Facking Zito pitch.

I know people who have given up their season tickets because of the FO's refusal to rebuild. I don't know one person that actually thinks the Giants will be good next year. None of my friends are planning on going to Opening Day and they've all gone every year since high school. People aren't going to come. They are alienating and !@#$ on the people of San Francisco and fans around the world. Appearing 'competitive' is a !@#$ insult to our intelligence. Even the casual fans and KNBR listeners know this team is going to blow goats.

The problem I see is everyone seems to over evaluate Ort. His average everywhere he has been has been below average since he left A ball.

2004 - AA age 23, 377 ab, and hit .252 110Ks only 10HRs
2005 - AA age 24, 503 ab, and hit .274 115Ks only 20HRs
2006 - AA age 25, 167 ab, and hit .251 38Ks only 2 HRs
2006 - AAA still 25, 262 ab, and hit .244 40Ks only 6HRs
2007 - AAA age 26, 305 ab, and hit .262 63Ks only 10HRs

Now the reason I think people are high on him because what he did last year, but look at the numbers closely.

2007 - SFG age 26, 157 ab, and hit .287, BUT 41Ks!! and 6HRs

Now at the age of 27 people think he is going to hit any better than .260? He will strike out 150+ times if he gets 500 abs with maybe 15HRs. I would rather have Sweeney for cheap who I would bet if healthy hits at or above .300 with at least that many HRs. I don't get the hype on Ort.

Winn and Lowry. Possibly Roberts, possibly Durham.

But not now, apparently. So, wait until June/July, hope that Winn does as well as last year, Lowry has a good showing, and Durham just has to have an "average" year (for him : OPS of .[sign in to see URL]). Roberts would have to have one of his "good" years (OPS over .700) and he'd still only be tradable to a team that absolutely needs a CF.

In July, it will depend on who needs what. A contending team who is hard up for a #3 pitcher (who is REALLY cheap for 3 years), or a 2B (with just a few months left on his contract), or a RF (if Winn is doing well) or whose CF just went on the DL ... well, a decent trade could be put together.

Ort is nothing more then a fifth OF on a good team -- certainly not a starting first baseman. The Giants simply have almost no position talent in the minor leagues.

I would rather see Schierholtz get a chance at first base. He played third base with throwing problems -- that would not be an issue at first base and he has at least shown some promise in the minors. He also is much younger than Ortmeier and maybe could learn some plate discipline.

Sabean's signings these last two years are all very annoying -- Vizquel's money could have been used to draft two more first round talents later in the amateur draft, but that fell because of bonus demands.

The same could be said for every other marginal player that Sabean signs from here on out. I would rather invest/risk in young players that may be good someday than pay a 41 year SS that was good two years ago. Even if the young player flames out, the Giants would be in the same position in two years b/c Vizquel will be gone.

Sabean truly is lost in the fog right now -- he clearly has no plan and probably came really close to trading Lincecum for Rios -- the only good thing about the Rowand signing.

At least last year Ned C. saved Sabean from signing Juan Pierre -- more proof that Sabean and those he trains are idiots.
