Sabean do you WANT us to hate you?!?!

Giants Eye Sweeney

Talks between Mike Sweeney and the Royals have slowed, and it looks like Mike Sweeney will look elsewhere for a job in 2008. Sweeney is just thirty-four, but struggled last season batting .260 with 7 HR and 38 RBI in seventy-four games. I think the Giants are looking at Sweeney as a platoon player with Dan Ortmeier, which would make sense because he put up similar numbers to Sweeney, but has more upside. Sweeney would probably have to take a one year deal, worth about 1-4 million dollars. I know that seems low, but if he wants a job this year he might have to drop from the eleven million he made last year. Personally, I think the Giants should pass on Sweeney. It does not make sense for the Giants to grab another aging player, they need to accept the fact that they are rebuilding and try to improve. They have cooled on the idea of trading Matt Cain, and are still looking for a third baseman while trying to improve their bullpen.

sabean is trying to rebuild and win now at the same time....

PMG probably fears that if the Giants dont put a good product on the field in '08, his ticket sales will plummet without #25 as the cash cow out in LF

Giants have a strong fan base of die hards, but the majority of the fans at Pac Bell are fairweather fans who wont pay the price of admission to watch Dan Ortmeier and Nate Schuerholz

Sabean did say in an interview that one of the reasons he didn't make the Lincecum for Rios deal was because he was afraid of being shot while walking across the street from the ballpark to his condo. Duh.

The way things are going, he'll be enemy number one in San Francisco this year. He better walk fast.

Just sayin'

I think most fans are prepared for a really shitty [sign in to see URL] am, and will be OK with it as long as we keep Cain & Lincecum.

Those Tuesday night games vs. the Pirates, Rockies, and Nationals will bhe new attendance lows for sure.

Sabean's always going after the guy who makes me think, "Man I wish we had that guy 4,5,6 years ago." Alou, Molina, Vizquel, Alfonzo, Grissom, Lofton, Galarraga...

Not to belittle the contributions of those guys but Sabean never had the nuts to make the kind of deal that would bring in a player that would put us over the top and make the Giants a the hands down favorite. This was all encompassed be the lack of interest in Vlad in 2002/3.

Mark me down for wanting Sweeney for under 4 mil. That is a deal for a guy that should still be a good hitter if healthy. He could platoon at 1st with Ort who I am not high on.

Well, Sweeney is not as productive a hitter as Moises Alou and has just as many health issues, if not more.

Pass.

I would like us to either let Ortmeier play or trade for Nick Johnson from the Nats. He should come cheap coming back from a broken leg, and they have Dmitri Young - Comeback player of the year at first...

Sabean's probably looking into Dmitri Young, not Johnson.

Have to agree with you. At that price it won't hurt the team if he does battle injuries yet again.

This team needs some pop and Sweeney can provide that.

The only problem is signing Sweeney would take away some playing time from Aurilia which the Giants may not want.
