From all reports, Sabean did well in the last draft when he drafted Bumgardner and Alderson with the Giants first two picks. Yeah, the organization needs position players, and Sabean did go on to draft Noonan and Fairley, but in the draft the team needs to maximize the picks by just taking the best players available at any given time. Beau Mills would have been good but I'll hold off judgement until I can see how well Burgardner does this next year.
The draft is a total c rap shoot.
Just sayin'
If the draft were a total crap shoot, then over a 10 year period with 500 picks a GM should be able to get a single position player that could start at a decent level of play.

The draft IS a total crap shoot. I *wish* the Giants would be able to draft and/or sign stellar position players. BUT - I think much more important is to :
- pick the BEST talent available when it's your pick, IGNORING supposed "needs" (because that player most likely won't be on your team until 3-5 years from the date of the pick, when needs have changed). Always pick THE BEST guy you can.
- go with what you know. IF (and I'm not saying this is definitely true, but others have) the Giants simply cannot develop good position talent, then they SHOULD be picking pitching, which they have shown they CAN develop.
I will reserve judgement on how well the Giants picked in 2007 until next year (at the earliest). After the 2008 season I'll look at how well the picks did during the year. I'll do the same after the 2009 season. At that point we'll have a better idea if picking Madison Bumgarner over Beau Mills was the right move.
I think that it's pretty clear at this point that the 2006 draft was a pretty darn successful one for the Giants, even if not one single other guy makes it to the majors. And considering how well Ben Snyder, Paul Oseguera, Kevin Pucetas and Adam Coward have done the last 2 years of pro ball, I expect *at least* one other guy to make it to the majors, and probably more than one.
--- Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

Ortmeier? Schierholtz? Frandsen? Lewis?
The jury is still out on all of the above - maybe we'll find out in 2008 (if Sabean stops signing crappy vets). Well, the jury isn't out on the fact that Lewis is the worst fielder the Giants have seen since D Hamilton. I expect ONE of the above to be a "decent" player. (Unless by "decent" you meant "star". I took "decent" to mean "approximately average", a little under or over.)

Shea Hey Part Deux
It's less of a craps shoot than the playoffs, if only because you get more chances.

I totally agree, but it seems Sabes grabs a pitcher no matter who the hell is on teh board.
We just fired our batting coach, right? Or am I dreaming?
