3rd Base option?

I am new to the board, but have been reading for a while. I read a few people say Leone was resigned. Could the Giants be thinking about giving him a shot in spring training to win the 3rd base job?

I absolutely think that's what they're considering, if only as a backup plan if they can't find something else. And that's a real [sign in to see URL] Feliz is still the best third baseman free agent out there that didn't fake free agency out of a snit with his agent. But say what you will about the Giants, they've gotten through the end of 2007 without resigning him.

Barring that or the ever decreasing likelihood of a trade for a third baseman, the Giants will only have in-house options with Kevin Frandsen and Rich [sign in to see URL] latter of which will also be likely in the hunt for the first base job, and the former will probably have to spell Durham at second a bit this year.

I doubt Leone will actually win the third base job, but he will definitely get a shot. And I will not be shocked if he makes the 25 man roster.

Re: …

Considering that the Magowan and Sabes declared the deferred payments as part of the payroll, the Giants don't have the money to re-sign Feliz. So maybe the Rowand signing has a silver lining...

Looks like Sabean tried to do just that.

Is Sabean like a crack addict who can't get enough of the magical Peter Happy?

Just sayin'

Re: 3rd Base option?

Paying $5 million again to Feliz is just a horizontal move that does nothing to help the team in the future.

Again any money that is spent on Feliz should be used to pay signing bonuses to players that slip in the draft because of high bonus demands. This is the only and best way to get multiple first round picks (talent-wise) when you have just two picks in the first three rounds. The Giants could secure 2-3 more top talents in the draft for one year of Feliz' salary. What would you rather have, players with potential that actually may good someday or another year of Feliz??

If the Giants truly want to rebuild this should be part of their plan -- of course it isn't.

If Feliz is signed for more than 1 year, then this offseason will be a disaster.

I also read on another post that the Giants lost out on Angel Joseph due to a paperwork error. He is a 16 year-old Latino player that has been compared to a young Alfonso Soriano. If this is true as well -- it just speaks volumes to ability of Sabean's regime to do anything correct. Maybe it wasn't the Giants fault, but if the paperwork error was on his end -- !@#$ Sabean.

What Sabean needs to do is make an old fashioned trade for a third baseman who is young enough to produce but is just there to keep the place warm until Villalona is ready to take over in three years. This way, the Giants keep the pick that they will get for Feliz, assuming somebody signs him, and still the Giants get some production out of the position. In saying this, I'm not opposed to the idea of Frandsen playing third, just as long as Aurilia is not on the roster because we all know that Bochy will play the veteran over the young guy.

Finally, I'd love to see the Giants trade for someone like Betemit, Encarnacion, or Teahen. Any one of those guys would be better than dealing with another year or two of Peter Happy.

Just sayin'

Did the Giants actually lose out on that kid? BA says they just didn't complete the signing because of a paperwork snafu. Sounds like they would still be able to just redo the paperwork. Anyone have any updates on this?

Giving Feliz more than one year would be like resigning Durham last year ... pointless.
