Ranking the best SP 1-2 punch in baseball. We arrive at #5...

5. Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum, Giants
Combined 2007 Numbers: 346.1 IP, [sign in to see URL] R/G, 313 strikeouts

The Giants are an awful team right now, but Cain and Lincecum are worth the price of admission. Cain broke out in 2007, and Lincecum, thanks to a tremendous changeup and ridiculously fast arm action, is an ace in waiting. Both are young, which means they'll gradually work their way up to the very top of this list.

Webb/Haren is the best combination in baseball right now.

If Liriano is right at the start of the season, could be Liriano/Santana.

Josh Beckett and Daisuke Matsuzaka are at least better than Smoltz/Hudson.

If Santana gets trade to Boston, Beckett/Santana has to be number 1.

Yea, putting Santana paired with an injury-bugged pitcher who has never pitched a healthy full season in the majors, and only once in his whole career, at #3 above all those other pairs is awfully presumptuous.

'Biscuit has never been injured, Liriano has been injured year after year.

Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

I don't think so. Santana is the best pitcher in either league right now. Him and a league average innings eater would legitimately be near the top of this list, and Liriano has a good shot to be alot better than that.

by that rational, it should be called "the best pitcher", not the best 1-2 punch. "1-2" implies a combo, a like pair, two of a kind with similar dominance... not stud a major dropoff innings-eater. they just threw santana in there because he's filthy. let's see liriano the rook throw a whole season first before proclaiming him half of the nastiest 1-2 punch in the majors. but then, same goes for cain/lincecum. lincecum hasn't done it for a year yet either, and i've been dropoffs before, like lowry's sophmore season. of course lowry != lincecum, but you feel me emoticon

No one ever said it had to be a balanced 1-2 punch, just the best combination of 1 and 2 starters.
