Sabean's tactics

While I have stated my indifference, or is it mild approval of the Rowand deal, wasting time scouting Kris Benson and talking to Tony Clark, while not going far enough down the road with McPherson is painting a clear picture that Sabean is still Sabean.

I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt on the Rowand deal, hoping that there was a Winn or Roberts trade in Sabeans back pocket, but he is showing us what the teams plan is with these latest actions.

From what I've seen since September here is what I think the plan is...

1. Build a lineup at all costs that will keep the team above the 95 loss mark. Even if that means passing on a question mark like Dallas McPherson for a guy like Tony Clark.

2. Continue to draft well.

3. Hope and wait for the quality players in the organization, most of whom will be starting out the year no higher than Augusta, or SJ.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

I still don't see why passing on McPherson would be 'for' Tony Clark. I don't see any connection between them other than they were mentioned in one article together.

If the Giants are walking away from McPherson because he wants too much money or he wants more than one year guaranteed (for a pile of cash), then they are doing the right thing.

If his demands are too high, then wait until Jan or Feb, and if he isn't signed his terms will be more realistic.

Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

It isn't necessarily. I said that because my personal hunch is that Sabean feels he's one competent bat away from his 80 wins. If he gets Clark he can lay off McPherson and wait for Feliz to come down from his 3 year demand which Sabean and everyone but Feliz knows will never happen.
