Re: Wha....? Benson?

I'm surprised that you're all surprised by this development. Sure, it's just one member of the Giants' management going to check out one pitcher throw 60 pitches, but, I mean, you didn't foresee that Sabean would do his due diligence and hunt down veteran savvy?

Sabean's favorite porno is "Two Girls, One Cup of Veteran Savvy," where Brian's both girls. Benson fulfills all three Sabean Hard-On Inducers:

1) Veteran.

2) White.

3) Best year(s) many years behind him.

** It's unclear as to whether or not Sabean's admired Benson from afar or has previously kicked Benson's tires at the end of this or any day. **

More impressive is that the Giants are looking at Tony Clark to be a middle of the order platoon bat. This is our team, folks.

I don't think Clark is being considered at the 'expense' of McPherson. The Giants almost assuredly want McPherson at third, where Clark doesn't play.

What the Giants seem to want more is someone on a one-year [sign in to see URL]'s wrong with that?

I could live with McPherson for a two year deal but not a guaranteed three years.

I will say that the Giants need to take some gambles on some younger players. Either guys from within the organization or younger cast offs from other teams, like McPherson.

Guys like Clark just muck up the whole lineup and really keep the organization stuck in limbo. It's time to take some chances and hope that some younger guys step up and produce. Even if the team gets one or two of these young guys to work out, the payoff for the roster and payroll will be huge.

Unless the Giants can trade for someone like Teahen, Beltre or Hall to play third base, I certainly would like to see the Giants take a gamble on someone like McPherson or Ensberg rather than get someone like Glaus, Rolen, or Crede.

Just my $.02

You'll get no argument from me about one-year deals. I just find it hard to believe altogether, given that the Giants are the one team baseball agents can universally beat out extra years from in order to close deals.

Most two-year deals won't kill a team either, though.

Mark Prior has come out and said he wants a one year deal so he can test the market again next winter. I wouldn't mind if the Giants took a flyer...

Because it is stupid waste of money and it prevents a young player from getting a chance. The Giants are going to be terrible next year and probably the year after that as well, so signing Ryan Klesko part II does very little to help the team in the short run or the long run. Do you really think Bochy will play a young player at first base if he thinks he has the chance to win 75 games playing Clark and Aurilia every day???

If the Giants are nickel and diming with McPherson they should just take the $2 Million that they are going to waste on Clark and give it to somebody under 30 that may turn out to be a surprise (this is what I meant by at the expense on McPherson (I will try and spell things out more clearly) -- all teams have limited resources to sign players, so spending $$ on Clark means less $$ to spend elsewhere). I would rather watch the Giants try and fail with a young player then continue to pad the 401K plans for aging vets on the downside of their careers.

This brings me to the Rowand signing -- a signing that you shockingly has said is not too bad. I would agree if the Giants were going to be any good over the next couple of years, but they are not, so this makes the signing too long and stupid. By the time the Giants are going to be any good again, Rowand and his reckless style of play will likely have declined to well below $12M per year production.

I know you love Nate Schierholtz -- the Rowand signing makes him at best a fourth OF -- how is that turning to the youth? I actually think Nate S. on a good team is probably a bench player b/c he walks once every two months, but still where is the youth movement.

It is really too bad that Nate S. was moved from third base -- I know that he struggled there, but if he could hit over .300 even with his very average power he would be a productive third baseman. Now he will be relegated to a bench position. Of course Roberts will get hurt at some point and he can pick up at-bats there as well.

I REALLY hope Sabes looks into this. Prior's upside is well worth a 1 year contract. Been hoping they would look into him ever since he was cut loose.

Wha....? Benson?

I don't think there's any way to tell what you're gonna get from him.

Agreed. For that reason, there are other teams out there with more pressing issues in their rotation than the Giants so he will get way too much cash for the year. For that reason alone, I say pass on him.

Just sayin.
