"The Pen"

(If the Giants add nobody new) I expect the pen to look like this in April :

Wilson
Walker
Hennessey
Chulk
Taschner
Capellan
Kline

with Misch and Sanchez starting games in Fresno (unless Lowry is traded).
Correia will be the #5 starter (and thus not in the pen).
Released or sent to pen in Fresno : Messenger.
If the Giants get a new guy for the pen, I expect Taschner to go to Fresno.

*IF* Kline does actually start the year in the pen, I expect him to be on a very short leash, and he'll get dropped soon (like Fasero) if he flails. Capellan has a lot more upside than Kline and if their performance is anywhere close (or Capellan's is better and Kline sucks) then Kline will be gone.

I wouldn't mind giving Dan Giese a chance in the pen. He did darn well last year in Fresno (a hitters league), keeping his K rate up and not walking many (Fresno has a reputation of umpires with a tight strike zone).

I'd be willing to bet that Capellan, who I believe hasn't pitched above A ball, gets shipped back to the Red Sox by the end of spring.

And Kline makes the team simply because of his salary, that is unless he is traded which I don't see much of a market for him.

To note however, is that Sabean said that he is looking to get a another veteran for the pen. Personally, I'd like to see Sabean deal Roberts to a team like the White Sox or Braves for a bullpen arm.

Just sayin'

I'm not expecting Capallen to make it, but if he does, I think both he and Taschner will have shorter leashes than Kline. Capallen has no experience above single-A, I don't think they'd give him that long if he doesn't quickly show he can handle skipping 2 levels. Taschner had worse numbers than Kline last seasons, and has been fairly consistantly reverse platoon. The makes Kline as the only southpaw with MLB experience who actually has a shot at getting lefties out.

I'd normally agree about Capellan, but this year should be about finding pieces for the future. If they hide Capellan in the back of the pen all year, they can move him to AA or AAA next year and let him finish his development. So far, he's done extremely well in his pro career, even if only in A ball (almost as well as Romo).

I really think that Kline will have the shortest leash. They dumped Fassero when he wasn't getting it done, they dumped Hammonds, when he blew. And if Kline performs like last year, he will positively suck.

* He had the worst K/9 of anybody on the team last year.
* He had the 3rd worst WHIP of non-rookies (behind Messenger and Munter) : 1.72
* He gave up way too many hits (3rd worst behind Messie and Muntie)

against lefties last year : .318/.375/.365/.740
against righties last year : .287/.350/.407/.757

That is just one horrible, ugly year. He hasn't had a good year since 2004 (which was *really* good) and he has just plain sucked the last 3 years.

I would like to see the Giants pick up a few guys on minor league deals w/ invites to ST. Even guys like Kirk Saarloos, Trever Miller, L. Vizcaino, Foulke, and then possibly give Giese, Threets another shot.

Kline needs to go...Taschner is right behind him.

I think Tasch can be a solid reliever for another team and that he may still have some value.

His only real problem is the walk. Last year his K/9 was almost an even 9 (51K/50IP) and he only gave up 44 Hits and 4 HRs. That isn't terrible. In fact, it's pretty good for a lefty reliever. It's the 29 BBs that led to the 1.46 WHIP and unfortunate 5.40 ERA.

Stuff wise, 94 from a lefty is kinda appealing. If he has a good spring and April/May, he might be worth something.

I think Giese would be a great risk for the pen. He did *really* well all last year. I would pass on Threets. He*sucked*, except for a very short stint in the AFL.

I also agree about Taschner. I think that many of the Giants pitchers have "nibblitus" - they spend too much time nibbling around the edges before they demonstrate that they can put the ball over the plate. They get behind in the count and get screwed when they HAVE to come in (or they walk the batter). I think it's a coaching problem.
