The bottom line is Sabean doesn't have a ton of faith in Shierholtz. If he did, he wouldn't have signed Rowand and I don't blame Sabean for doing so.

When was the last time Sabean handed a player (pitcher or Positional) a starting job at the begining of the season.

Not Jerome Williams
Not Noah Lowry
Not Matt Cain
Not Tim Lincecum

I don't think it has ever happened. All the players above go their chance from the player in front of them getting hurt. They actually went out and signed a 126 million dollar albatross because they didn't have faith in their pitching in the Minors, heck He didn't have faith in Matt Cain being the Ace so they didn't even just go out and pay for a #2 or #3 they went out and paid Ace money. I have 0 faith in Sabean to be able to judge talent at the Major League Level.

Remember all the trips Matt Williams made to AAA Phoenix?

How about Linecum first start? They pitched him on a national TV game and he got belted pretty good.

It's never good to rush players too quickly. I rather ease them into a game slowly just to get their feet wet.

As far as Sabean being able to judge talent, I honestly believe he's just had a lot of bad luck over the last few years. No matter what he does, it just turns out bad. Should he take the blame? 100%.

Lincecum came up when Russ Ortiz got hurt, Lincecum was pitching lights out in Fresno and for a couple weeks people wanted him to be called up. If Ortiz doesn't get hurt does Lincecum get that start, does he not get called up to the Big club until September??? I don't know.

Players need to be able to find themselves at the Big League level, it can't be first sign of trouble and yank or they will never learn to adjust.

Technically, it was an August callup, but yea, he'd probably qualify too.

For some reason I thought there was an injury that allowed him the starts, but can't seem to find anything.

Walker was hurt, Christiansen was sucking, but Rueter had been pure crap and was simply released a couple of weeks earlier.

God that was a horrible Aug :

8/1 Beni-tard goes on rehab in SJ

8/2 Grissim DFA'd

8/7 Rueter on DL (for "gout")

8/9 Alex Sanchez DFA'd

8/12 Alou and Munter put on DL

8/14 Rueter off DL and DFA'd

8/15 All-Gordo Benitez activated

8/21 Walker on DL

8/26 Cain called up !!!!!!. J Christiansen DFA'd

8/27 Tucker traded to Philies for Kelvin Pichardo !!!

8/30 Acquired 2 pieces of crap (pitchers Dusty Bergman and Ronnie Ray) for Christiansen

---
Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

I like the signing simply because of the intangibles he brings to the club. We've got a fair number of young players on the roster now, and they need to be taught to approach the game the right way.

Rowand is a [sign in to see URL] never-say-die hustler who will do anything to win. He's exactly the type of player I would want as a role model for our younger players, irrespective of his actual stats.

So Zito all over again??? Sorry, but I want production not a player/coach for 12 million a year. If you want a player/coach you go get Moises Alou for 1 season. Someone that can teach the kids for a year and wont be blocking those you want to teach for 5 years.

Does ANYONE like the Aaron Rowand signing?

Questions for those who are saying Rowand is overrated as a defender:

How many Phillies games did you see last season? In 2006?
How does one determined "overrated" ?

I am going off of what Keith Law is saying about him. I am sure he has seen a good amount of Rowand's games. I was initially not too thrilled about his bat, but if he says his defense and arm are average I am going to believe him. All fans really see are the few highlight catches he makes running into walls. I don't think anyone is questioning his hustle though.

Well, if an expert like Keith says he is "average" then, surely, he is not "overrated" by those of us who know it all (that would be us, anyone who agrees with us and anyone not named Sabean)

"Players need to be able to find themselves at the Big League level, it can't be first sign of trouble and yank or they will never learn to adjust."

That is why I believe slowly working them in the games. Don't make Linecum start on a nation TV game. For example, I would prefer Lincecum make his first start on a Monday game against the Marlins in Florida. Very low pressure game, then you build from that.

I think doing that puts more pressure on a player, all they want to do is play and if you don't get consistent playing time or you are always looking over your shoulder that can get in your head more then just the pressure of being on National TV or the pressure of winning, because it's the pressure of losing your spot. Yes there will always be that pressure throughout your career, but at least if you get consistant playing time and your coaches have the confidence to allow you to pitch/hit out of slumps then you will have confidence in yourself.
