Re: Win now with Konerko at 1b

I don't see how the White Sox could trade Konerko for anyone on the Giants. Who would they have play first base? Thome is a DH because of his injury issues. The only corner infield option we can realistically get is Crede, and then what is the point?

I would rather just give McPherson a try.

Konerko for a package with Sanchez as the centerpiece would make the Giants better, but I doubt Chicago would do that.

Maybe Winn and Sanchez would make sense. I don't know who is in the OF for Chicago though.

Re: …

ESPN had a "depth chart" link on each team's "home" page. Although it's not always 100% correct, it's a great place to start if you're wondering "who are their OFs?"

Here is the depth chart for the [url=[sign in to see URL]

Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

Yes, I've used that before, I was just too lazy to look it up. It looks like maybe they could use a guy like Roberts who only has two years left and has a reasonable contract (okay not reasonable for a mid 30's 4th OF) or Winn at a slightly steeper price, could help transition the outfield to the two youngsters, Quentin and Owens. I doubt Chicago wants to give both those guys 500 AB, while Quentin has upside he was horrible last year.

True they would be taking some chances if they had to move Thome to 1B.

That said it seems like Winn/Roberts, Sanchez, Hennesey might be enough. I'd prefer to keep Hennessey, but Sanchez and Winn might not be enough.

Win now with Konerko at 1b

Personally, I'd rather drop the "win now" mentality that got the team into the hole they are in. I'd rather see them use 2008 to try to find a few guys that can be really cheap major leaguers, even some are only "moderately good" or "bench players".

In this situation, I think it would be good to take a flyer on a cheap youngster like Ortmeier or Brad Eldred or Dallas McPherson.

Winn and Sanchez for Konerko? Yeah right.

Williams would want Timmey or Cain for Konerko and that isn't going to happen.

Just move along people.

Just sayin'

Konerko is a beast. I would absolutely love him on the gmen, but it's never gonna happen for Winn & Sanchez. Maybe Winn/Lowry/Lewis?? Put it this way; most teams would love Konerko to be on their team, and most teams have much better bargaining chips than the giants.

White Sox have Josh Fields at 3rd, with a trade of Konerko, Crede or Fields would play 1B.

Re: Win now with Konerko at 1b

He hit .259 last year with an 841 OPS. He's not going to carry a lineup IMO.

He had a great year in 06. And you're right it would take more than Sanchez and Winn/Roberts.

And as for this "win now" it just isn't possible, but I'd like to win in 2009, or 2010, and the Giants wont be able to do that through FA and internal promotion alone. And they aren't going to be able to add all the pieces at once, so everyone who is complaining about adding a piece or two this offseason needs to realize that no one can add 3-4 pieces in one offseason. If they don't start adding a piece or two now, the rebuild will only take longer.

Anyone who thinks we can have a competetive team that is only a FA or two away, by internal promotion and picking up non-tenders before 2011 (when Cain and Lowry will/could be gone) is dreaming. While Rowand is not going to carry a lineup or even close to it, we need a certain number of decent players, and there's a good chance that we only get one or two decent everyday guys from the group we now have. By adding one now, Sabean is a step closer. It sucks he's an OF, and not an anchor type bat but I appreciate Sabean's intentions to speed up the process, even if it costs a few bucks extra. All that said, they better up the payroll a bit.

Agreed, Fresh.

With scavenging what is possible now and next year combined with some excellent luck from the farm, the lineup could be a lot better in 2 years. I'm cool with that as long as it coincides with serious pond-stocking of good young talent that will pay off in 3-5 years. Add all that up and you have decent baseball with a shot at winning some games just about every season.
